(TM) 9.0 Automation System, a command and control center for multi-path enabled content management and distribution designed to meet local market needs throughout Asia and worldwide.

This most recent major upgrade to the AIRO system, a very popular automation solution with more than 200 customer operations on-air throughout the world, will be showcased at BroadcastAsia -- June 19 to 22 in Singapore.

"We examined the needs of broadcasters throughout Asia and around the world, many of whom work in a rapidly changing multicultural environment, to determine how AIRO can enable them to attain new levels of cost effectiveness and operational efficiency," explained Dave Weber, vice president of marketing. "Whether managing a single facility with multiple channels or coordinating the operation of multiple facilities, our customers' most pressing needs centered around broadcasting more channels with fewer, less sophisticated operators.

"Over a year ago, based on these findings, we at Odetics focused our development investment on multi-channel usability and media management functionality in our AIRO product line. Today, our investment has paid off," Weber continued. "We are proud to introduce AIRO 9.0 to our customers and the worldwide broadcast market. Now our customers have access to an integrated, media management and delivery solution that provides automated acquisition and cataloging functions and supports extended media transfer and migration, whether over the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. , WAN, intranet or Internet. Armed with AIRO 9.0's sophisticated features, Odetics can simplify the process of deploying multi-channel and centralcasting delivery strategies for all broadcasters."

Weber further outlined some of the key attributes of AIRO 9.0 that are of particular interest to the Asian market, including the system's capability to offer pre-air review of content -- key to selective content auditing, censoring censoring

and quality control policies. AIRO's flexible workflows and subtitling and dubbing control devices allow a single content source to feed multiple channels in multiple countries in multiple languages. Finally, AIRO 9.0's expanded archiving capability, controlling the next generation of DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  data tape storage solutions, will become critical to broadcasters who favor re-use or repurposing of content.

More specifically the broadcasters at BroadcastAsia will see:

New User Interface/Streamlined Navigation

AIRO 9.0 will feature two new applications, Delivery Manager and Content Manager, with new and improved user interfaces specifically designed to provide operators the unified command A command with a broad continuing mission under a single commander and composed of significant assigned components of two or more Military Departments that is established and so designated by the President, through the Secretary of Defense with the advice and assistance of the Chairman of  and control of content and delivery functions. The software may be able to create a playlist automatically.  information required to flawlessly manage a multi-channel broadcast operation.

Flexible Delivery Workflow

The new Delivery Manager application, packed with new event planning Event planning is the process of planning a festival, ceremony, competition, party, or convention.

Event planning includes budgeting, establishing date and alternate date (rain date), selecting and reserving the event site, acquiring permits, and coordinating transportation
, monitoring and auditing features, greatly simplifies interaction with the on-air playlist. It also provides for enhanced event intervention capabilities, readying "hot standby A hardware device that is connected to the computer or computer complex and remains powered on. It is ready to take over immediately if the primary unit fails. A hot standby may refer to a complete computer system; for example, a standby server, or a component in a computer such as a  events" to air, and new user defined time displays and countdown clocks. A device tree display shows each AIRO-controlled device (local or remote) and its real-time activity status. Multiple offset GPIs, CG and Logo nested event components can be applied directly to any event at any point in the playlist. Using the newly integrated graphical timeline, a simple mouse click will easily adjust the timing for secondary event components.

AIRO's multi-channel flexibility lets customers configure the system to their operations. For customers who air content in multiple time zones and perform regional breakaways, the system controls multiple playlists that run against each local clock for that region, and tight integration with AIRO's Media Management capabilities insures timely delivery of the correct content with fewer possibilities of user errors.

Enhanced Content Management/Remote Media Transfer

The Content Manager application offers the user on-demand and shared access to program and spot material on any storage device managed by AIRO's distributed storage Storing data in multiple computers or in computers that are geographically dispersed. This was an early term for storage that evolved into SANs and storage virtualization. See SAN and storage virtualization.  management architecture. The improved media browsing capabilities now take advantage of streaming technologies, such as Pinnacle Systems' new Stream Factory(TM), to enable access to any material, in any format, on any storage device. This capability enables a variety of different users -- from the Programming Department (reviewing program material in a TCS (Transportation Control System) A widely used integrated information system for railroad transportation developed by the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was later implemented by Union Pacific when the companies merged. (TM) Automated Tape Library) to the Traffic Department (browsing spots dubbed into the video server) to the Master Control Operator (viewing the on-air signal as a confidence monitor) -- to increase media collaboration and overall quality control across a broadcast enterprise.

With the introduction of AIRO 9.0, Odetics Broadcast is also pledging its support for Quantum/ATL's M1500 modular enterprise class library. The M1500, to be controlled by AIRO's Data Library Manager (DLM See ILM.

Available in four rack unit A unit of measurement of the height of a rack-mounted device. One rack unit, or RU, is 1.75". See rack mounted.  increments, starting at two drives with storage capacity for over 180 hours of 8Mbit MPEG-2 content and expandable up to 20 drives and 1800 hours of content, the M1500 provides a solution scalable enough to increase throughput and storage capacity and flexible enough to accommodate ever-advancing data storage technologies.

Powered by Windows 2000

AIRO 9.0 introduces support for the Windows 2000 platform, which provides greater usability, stability and performance for the system. AIRO's unique user interface configuration capability allows operators in different shifts to personalize their individual desktops for their unique workflow needs. USB USB

support in Windows 2000 expands AIRO's capability to interface to a new generation of broadcast devices. The Plug and Play Windows 2000 platform greatly simplifies configuration and accelerates the addition of new devices to AIRO's automation platform. AIRO 9.0 also provides an easy upgrade path from users on Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  4.0 and previous AIRO releases.

Early Adoption in Asian Market

One of the first customers in Asia to adopt AIRO 9.0 will be Cosmos Satellite TV of Macau. Already a large contract provider of broadcast services, Cosmos is significantly upgrading their system with Odetics support to provide additional channels. When fully implemented, the company will have 14 channels on-air with AIRO 9.0.
