Observing the charted course.

Few, if any, of those who work in the foundries of our country are pleased with the way our political system works, and special interests dominate what does and does not get done. I noticed in the editorial, "Charting a Course for Ourselves" (MODERN CASTING, October 2005) there was dissatisfaction for the political process in the U.S. This editorial alluded to the opinion held by some that we should use our political muscle to establish trade laws that benefit us without regard to how it affects others.

Were we to succeed in establishing either tariffs or non-tariff barriers to trade Non-tariff barriers to trade are trade barriers that restrict imports but are not in the usual form of a tariff.

They are criticized as a means to evade free trade rules such as those of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the European Union (EU), or North American Free
, the entire world would lose. First, American consumers lose because of paying higher prices than they would otherwise. We are not the only people raising families and having trouble making ends meet. Second, American consumers lose because if our prices are higher despite having more advanced capital and labor with a higher educational level, then we are not producing very well (the price of an item is simply an expression of how many resources it took to make and distribute the item). Instead, we could be making something that we are good at (i.e. that we make at a lower cost than other countries) and trading to get what we want. Third, the world loses because our choice to produce fewer items so that we can protect an industry limits what they can consume. Fourth, we prevent jobs from going to other countries that need them. Being poor in the U.S. cannot be compared to being poor in Guatemala; we face missing a few meals, they face starvation starvation, condition in which deprivation of food has forced the body to feed on itself. Causes are famine, fasting, malnutrition, or abnormalities of the mucosal lining of the digestive system. .

who will not feel the consequences of this course, but I recently took a promotion that sets me on a career course in the metalcasting industry. Despite having much to lose if we cannot compete in an international free-market, we must stand up for equality in the political process and not become just another special interest group exploiting American tax-payers for our own benefit.
