Strategic Partnership Combines Java Usability with

CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  Scalability in PowerTier for EJB (Enterprise JavaBeans) A software component in Sun's J2EE platform, which provides a pure Java environment for developing and running distributed applications. EJBs are written as software modules that contain the business logic of the application.

ObjectEra, Inc. and Persistence Software today announced that Persistence will license ObjectEra's JBroker to be included with PowerTier for Enterprise JavaBeans See EJB.

(specification, business, programming) Enterprise JavaBeans - (EJB) A server-side component architecture for writing reusable business logic and portable enterprise applications. EJB is the basis of Sun's Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE).
(TM)(EJB) transactional application server.

The partnership provides PowerTier customers with the first object request broker See ORB.

(programming) Object Request Broker - (ORB) Part of the OMG CORBA specification, an ORB's basic function is to pass method invocation requests to the correct objects and return the results to the caller.
(ORB) technology with support for remote method invocation (programming) Remote Method Invocation - (RMI) Part of the Java programming language library which enables a Java program running on one computer to access the objects and methods of another Java program running on a different computer.

over Internet inter-ORB protocol (protocol, standard) Internet Inter-ORB Protocol - (IIOP) A protocol which will be mandatory for all CORBA 2.0 compliant platforms. The initial phase of the project is to build an infrastructure consisting of: an IIOP to HTTP gateway which allows CORBA clients to access WWW  (RMI/IIOP). The powerful combination of JBroker and PowerTier enables EJB customers to have universal access to CORBA objects, bringing EJB into a true enterprise environment and enabling customers to benefit from the usability of RMI (Remote Method Invocation) A standard from Sun for distributed objects written in Java. RMI is a remote procedure call (RPC), which allows Java objects (software components) stored in the network to be run remotely.  and robustness of IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) The CORBA message protocol used on a TCP/IP network (Internet, intranet, etc.). CORBA is the industry standard for distributed objects, which allows programs (objects) to be run remotely in a network. .

"We are very glad to see Persistence choose JBroker as a core technology for its PowerTier Enterprise JavaBeans server," said Rohit Garg, ObjectEra's chief technology officer. "JBroker is the next generation Java CORBA ORB that has been specially designed with performance, scalability, and features needed for building large scale Java Application Servers. We believe that the bundling of JBroker will strengthen PowerTier's offering and will result in a powerful combination of strength and usability."

"This partnership is a natural marriage of two best of breed technologies," said Erik Frieberg, vice president of marketing, Persistence Software. "Our customers are using the PowerTier transactional application server to build highly scalable e-commerce solutions. We needed an ORB that would match this scalability, and provide our EJB customers with access to the world of CORBA communication."

In recent internal benchmarks, JBroker proved to be twice as fast as its competitors, making it the clear choice for bundling with the PowerTier transactional application server.

PowerTier, combined with JBroker, provides developers with the ease of use of RMI and the performance and robustness of IIOP. This combination creates the foundation for developing reusable and portable, industry standard distributed systems with the benefits of both CORBA and EJB. CORBA provides access to legacy systems, while EJB provides platform independence and solves developer productivity, scalability and database access issues. With EJB distributed through CORBA, the net result is a highly productive environment for a component-based server.

About JBroker

JBroker is a CORBA based Java server ORB, development tools, and services that have been specially designed for building large scale mission-critical systems. JBroker differentiates itself against other Java ORB products in the market in several key areas like performance, scalability, high-end features, and standards compliance. The JBroker product runs on Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Sun Solaris, with support for other major UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
platforms scheduled for later this year. JBroker supports both JDK (Java Development Kit) A Java software development environment from Sun. It includes the JVM, compiler, debugger and other tools for developing Java applets and applications. Each new version of the JDK adds features and enhancements to the language.  1.1 as well as JDK 1.2 (Java 2).

About PowerTier

PowerTier 5 for EJB includes the Persistence PowerSync technology with cache replication, allowing multiple application servers to maintain a consistent set of critical application information within the application server's shared object cache. By combining PowerSync with load-balancing and failover, PowerTier 5 for EJB delivers the industry's first platform for web/internet distributed stateful, high-availability transaction services. PowerTier, combined with JBroker, also provides enterprise interoperability with its support for RMI/IIOP, enabling universal access from any client, to any database and any directory service.

PowerTier's container-managed persistent objects automate mapping between software objects and relational databases saving developers from time-consuming and error-prone data access programming. PowerTier's Command Center management console provides users with the ability to monitor and manage an application once it is deployed.
