Standards work during the week will extend the group's Model Driven Architecture(R) (MDA (1) (Monochrome Display Adapter) The first IBM PC monochrome video display standard for text. Due to its lack of graphics, MDA cards were often replaced with Hercules cards, which provided both text and graphics. See PC display modes and Hercules Graphics. (R)), its middleware infrastructure, and its industry-specific domain specifications.

Coalition Day

Hosted by OMG's C4I Domain Task Force, Coalition Day brings together defense, intelligence, crisis response, and emergency management community leaders from the US and other countries for a day of presentations and panel discussion centered on IT interoperability problems and opportunities in both military and civilian crisis management. Lee Holcomb, CTO, US DHS will start the day with a morning keynote.

E-Government Information Day

Hosted by OMG's E-Government Domain Special Interest Group, this Information Day will address the needs of e-Government application developers, users, and content providers. The MDA, already providing benefit to the US General Services Administration The General Services Administration (GSA) was established by section 101 of the Federal Property and Administrative Services Act of 1949 (40 U.S.C.A. § 751). The GSA sets policy for and manages government property and records.  (GSA (1) (Global mobile Suppliers Association, Sawbridgeworth, U.K., www.gsacom.com) A membership organization of suppliers of GSM products and services. Its goal is to promote GSM as the worldwide mobile communications standard. See GSM Association and GSM. ), will be the topic of several morning presentations. Additional topics include security, Enterprise Application Integration, and Architecture-Driven Modernization.

Information Assurance for High Risk Environments Information Day

Hosted by OMG's Information and Security Assurance Platform Special Interest Group, this Information Day will explore requirements and synergy for information assurance among Military, Government, and Commercial Enterprises. Topics include the Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS) Architecture, MILS in Enterprise Computing, security in the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS JTRS Joint Tactical Radio System
JtRS Just The Right Shoe
JTRS Just the Right Size
JTRS Johnson Technical Reports Server
JTRS Joint Tenancy with Right of Survivorship

), and security in banking and finance.

Healthcare Information Day

Hosted by OMG's Healthcare Domain Task Force and keynoted by LeRoy E. Jones, this day includes presentations on the use of the MDA in healthcare standards and cooperation between the Healthcare DTF and healthcare standards organization HL7, building on the liaison agreement between the two organizations announced in mid-September. The Healthcare DTF will rely on HL7's UML-based Reference Information Model and HL7 Development Framework for its new suite of service specifications.

New Modeling Specifications

OMG's Analysis and Design (AD) PTF PTF - Program Temporary Fix  will review revised draft specifications for Queries, Views, and Transformations based on its modeling foundation, the MetaObject Facility (MOF). In the MDA, business models are transformed to computing models and then to running applications. This forthcoming specification will standardize these steps and increase the impact of MDA-based development. The AD PTF will also evaluate a UML Profile for Systems Engineering. Completed specifications for Versioning in MOF 2.0 and for a MOF 2.0-based Facility and Object Lifecycle definition will start the series of votes leading to formal adoption.

New Infrastructure Specifications

The Middleware and Related Services (MARS) PTF will complete its evaluations of two new specifications and start the series of votes leading to formal adoption: Streams for CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global (R) Components will enable new applications for OMG's component platform in the Telecommunications industry, while a UML Profile and Metamodel for Voice-based Applications will allow definition of voice-based dialogues independent of the target voice platform.

The Real-Time, Embedded, and Specialized Systems (RTESS RTESS Real Time Embedded and Specialized System ) PTF expects to complete its evaluation of draft specifications for High-Performance Enablers, Reliable Ordered Multicast, Real-Time Notification, and Global Navigation Systems Client Services.

New Business Rules Specifications

OMG's Business Enterprise Integration (BEI) DTF will complete evaluations of a proposed metamodel for Business Semantics of Business Rules.

OMG Tutorials, Software Demonstrations

Four tutorials will survey and highlight OMG specifications and technology areas, including a "Survey of OMG Specifications," "Introduction to UML 2.0," "A tutorial and case study on Executable Enterprise Architecture for Government and Defense," and "OMG's Software Based Communications Specifications." On Monday, five MDA experts and consultants will share their insights on how to enable MDA in organizations at a seminar hosted by OMG's MDA FastStart program. Meeting sponsor Objective Interface Systems will speak at a plenary session on Wednesday.

Open and freely available, OMG specifications have been implemented by many vendors, universities, and other groups. In Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday, implementors will display their products at a central demonstration area.

UML Certification Examinations

Attendees may take OMG's UML Certification examinations during the meeting week at a nearby testing site, and receive a 15% discount off the regular price. For more information, see www.omg.org/meetingumlcertinfo.

This meeting description is based on preliminary information. OMG Task Forces will finalize their agendas for the meeting during the week of October 18th and post them at www.omg.org/agendas.

Co-Located Meetings

Two organizations will co-locate their meetings with OMG: The International Council on Systems Engineering The International Council on Systems Engineering or INCOSE (pronounced as in-co-see) is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to the advancement of systems engineering and to raise the professional stature of systems engineers.  (INCOSE INCOSE International Council On Systems Engineering , www.incose.org) will hold its Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference from November 2 through 4, and the Business Process Management Notation (BPMN BPMN Business Process Modeling Notation , www.bpmn.org) working group of the Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI BPMI Business Process Management Initiative (HP, Nortel, Sun, Sybase, Etc.)
BPMI British Profile Management Initiative
, www.bpmi.org) will meet on November 3 and 4.

About The OMG

With well-established standards covering software from design and development, through deployment and maintenance, and extending to evolution to future platforms, the Object Management Group (OMG) supports a full-lifecycle approach to enterprise integration which maximizes ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot). , the key to successful IT. OMG's standards cover multiple operating systems, programming languages, middleware and networking infrastructures, and software development environments. OMG's Modeling standards, the basis for the MDA, include the Unified Modeling Language See UML.
