Object Management Group Meets in Yokohama, Japan; Advances Modeling and Biotechnology Standards; Members Also Charter Real-Time and Embedded Systems Task Force.

Business/Technology Editors

NEEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2002

Members of the Object Management Group(TM) (OMG(TM)) met in Yokohama, Japan, from April 22 through April 26, 2002 at a meeting sponsored by the Distributed Objects Promotion Group (DOPG), an organization of fifteen Japanese vendors of distributed computing technology. Application modeling standards, used in every computing discipline, form the foundation of OMG's specification suite. At this meeting OMG members initiated adoption of a modeling infrastructure standard that will define metamodels for Queries, Views, and Transformations in the revised 2.0 version of the Meta-Object Facility (MOF).

Formal Standard Adoption

Also at this meeting, the group formally adopted a new specification standardizing a representation for Gene Expression in distributed biotechnology applications. Defined in OMG's new Model Driven Architecture(TM) (MDA (1) (Monochrome Display Adapter) The first IBM PC monochrome video display standard for text. Due to its lack of graphics, MDA cards were often replaced with Hercules cards, which provided both text and graphics. See PC display modes and Hercules Graphics. (TM)), the Gene Expression specification is specified as a Unified Modeling Language See UML.

(language) Unified Modeling Language - (UML) A non-proprietary, third generation modelling language. The Unified Modeling Language is an open method used to specify, visualise, construct and document the artifacts of an object-oriented software-intensive system
(TM) (UML(TM)) model, which defines an XML DTD (Document Type Definition) A language that describes the contents of an SGML document. The DTD is also used with XML, and the DTD definitions may be embedded within an XML document or in a separate file.  (Document Type Definition) along with conforming data structures in the programming languages Java and C++.

New Task Force

At OMG, a Task Force carries out the technical work required to define a new specification. In Yokohama, OMG members chartered the Real-time, Embedded, and Specialized Systems (RTESS RTESS Real Time Embedded and Specialized System ) Platform Task Force (PTF PTF - Program Temporary Fix ) to focus efforts to extend the organization's already extensive specifications in these areas.

Meeting Participation and Activities

OMG members also participated in other related activities. Many attended an Information Day on Crisis Response computing. Speakers from the Japan Defense Agency, the Japan Cabinet Secretariat for Security and Crisis Management, the Korea National Defense University, CISCO Corporation's Global Defense Support unit, the Mitre Corporation, Finnish defense research, and the U.S. Department of Defense joined OMG Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Dr. Richard Soley in presenting recent developments in software and computing to support Crisis Management.

An additional Information Day presented OMG standards, including the group's Model Driven Architecture (MDA). Attendees also viewed live demonstrations of OMG technologies, which included four interoperating implementations of the CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global (R) Component Model (CCM). Those who attended also participated in the following tutorials: a survey of OMG technologies, a technical overview of CORBA, Building Real-time Systems with UML and CORBA, and the UML profile for Enterprise Distributed Object Computing The UML profile for Enterprise Distributed Object Computing (EDOC) is a standard of the Object Management Group in support of open distributed computing using model-driven architecture and Service-Oriented Architecture.  (EDOC).

Next Meeting

OMG members will next meet in Orlando, Florida, USA during the week of June 24-28, 2002. Interested non-members may request to come as observers; for information see www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/guest.htm.

About The OMG

With well-established standards covering software from design, through development, to deployment and maintenance, the Object Management Group (OMG) supports a full-lifecycle approach to enterprise integration. Based on the established Object Management Architecture (OMA) and emerging Model Driven Architecture (MDA), OMG's standards cover application design and implementation. OMG's Modeling standards include the UML (Unified Modeling Language) and CWM (Common Warehouse Metamodel For other uses of "CWM", see CWM (disambiguation).
The Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM) is a specification for modeling metadata for relational, non-relational, multi-dimensional, and most other objects found in a data warehousing environment.
). CORBA, the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (standard, programming) Common Object Request Broker Architecture - (CORBA) An Object Management Group specification which provides a standard messaging interface between distributed objects.

The original CORBA specification (1.
, is OMG's standard open platform. OMG also issues the CORBAservices and a rapidly-growing set of industry-specific standards in vertical markets including healthcare, telecommunications, biotechnology, transportation and a dozen other areas. The OMG is headquartered in Needham, MA, USA, with an office in Tokyo, Japan as well as international marketing offices in the UK and Germany, along with a U.S. government representative in Washington, DC.

For information on joining the OMG or additional information, please contact OMG headquarters by phone at +1-781-444 0404, by fax at +1-781-444 0320, or by email at info@omg.org. The OMG provides current information and services for distributed enterprise computing on the World Wide Web at www.omg.org and www.corba.org.
