A memorial service will be held Sept. 4 for Emma Bell Johnson of Portland, formerly of Lane County, who died Aug. 29 of age-related causes. She was 85. Johnson was born July 24, 1917, in Strickler, Ark., to Charles and Gertrude Richardson Beckmon. She married J.N. "Buck" Johnson in Arkansas on Dec. 30, 1934. He died in 1969. She lived in Strickler until 1942, when she moved to Lane County, living in Lorane and the Eugene area. She moved to Portland in 2001. She was a homemaker and worked as a school aide in Elmira. She enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading. She was active with the Salvation Army Salvation Army, Protestant denomination and international nonsectarian Christian organization for evangelical and philanthropic work. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 43,554. As of April 2007, the city's population is estimated at 77,465. ; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Two sons died previously, Jerry in 1967 and Randy in 1993. Wednesday's service will be at 2 p.m. at Lorane Christian Church. Inurnment will be private. Poole-Larsen Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice. Janell Cooley Janell Eileen Cooley of Eugene died Aug. 29 of age-related causes. She was 77. Cooley was born Dec. 7, 1924, in Hastings, Neb., to D.C. and Edith Buchow Lay. She married Ray Cooley in Eugene on Aug. 10, 1946. She graduated from Eugene High School in 1942. In addition to Eugene, she had lived in Germany, Canada and a number of states. She was a housewife and worked as an airplane riveter during World War II. She enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping and gardening. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Pamela Olson and Marlys Reid, both of Eugene; a sister, Marlys Lay of Eugene; and two grandchildren. No service is planned. Poole-Larsen Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Ian Hardie Ian F. "Scotty" Hardie of Eugene died Aug. 29 of cancer. He was 88. No service is planned. Private inurnment will be at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene. Rest-Haven Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.
