Obituaries.Byline: The Register-Guard Delmar Stolsig A memorial service will be held Aug. 4 for Delmar H. Stolsig of Baker City, formerly of Marcola, who died July 6 of a heart attack. He was 75. Stolsig was born March 15, 1927, in Corvallis. He was a veteran of the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. and a member of the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars. Stolsig worked as a farmhand and as a mechanic. He belonged to a Neighborhood Watch group and the Disabled American Veterans The Disabled American Veterans, or DAV, is an organization for disabled veterans that helps them and their families through various means. It currently has over 1.2 million members. The DAV was controversial during the 2006 election cycle. . Stolsig lived in Marcola for most of his life and settled in Baker City five years ago. Survivors include a son, Del of Springfield; a daughter, Leslie of Springfield; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Richard Tomberlin COTTAGE GROVE Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery). - A memorial service will be held July 30 for Richard A. "Dick" Tomberlin of Cottage Grove, who died July 25 of age-related causes. He was 81. Tomberlin was born April 28, 1921, in Brainerd, Minn., to Hozey and Edna Marcott Tomberlin. He married Evelyn Rikala in Ball Club, Minn., on July 15, 1944. He worked on the Alaska Pipeline. Tomberlin also was employed as a gravel truck driver and sawmill sawmill, installation or facility in which cut logs are sawed into standard-sized boards and timbers. The saws used in such an installation are generally of three types: the circular saw, which consists of a disk with teeth around its edge; the band saw, which worker. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, metal detecting and jigsaw puzzles. Tomberlin lived in this area for 48 years. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael of Merrimack, N.H., Kenneth of Albany and Patrick and Richard, both of Cottage Grove; three daughters, Cecelia Novy of Great Falls Great Falls, city (1990 pop. 55,097), seat of Cascade co., N central Mont., second largest city in the state, at the confluence of the Missouri and Sun rivers and near the falls that give the city its name; inc. 1888. , Mont., Carol Stubbert of Springfield and Mary Nitzel of Cottage Grove; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A daughter, Barbara Casteel, and a grandson, Andrew Stubbert, died previously. Malone was born March 23, 1969, in Hayward, Calif., to Tommy and Sharon Valencia Malone. He graduated from Creswell High School in 1987. He was a member of the high school's wrestling team that won a state championship in 1987. Malone received a bachelor's degree in economics from Portland State University in 1996. He was on the university's wrestling team. He worked as a construction foreman In construction, the foreman is the worker or tradesman who is in charge of the construction crew. Generally a construction worker with many years of experience and talent, the foreman is a wealth of knowledge and a key asset to the project. for Hoffman Structures Construction. Malone enjoyed wrestling, fishing and camping, and he was a member of the Laborer's Union Local 296 in Portland. He lived in Creswell for 23 years and in Newark, Calif., before settling in Normandy Park. Brown Jr., of Portland died July 13 of age-related causes. The former Springfield and Eugene resident was 86. Brown was born April 25, 1916, in Amity am·i·ty n. pl. am·i·ties Peaceful relations, as between nations; friendship. [Middle English amite, from Old French, from Vulgar Latin *am , Ark., to John and Nancy Brown. He graduated from high school in Amity. He married Martha Smith on April 20, 1940. From 1953 to 1990, Brown lived in Springfield, where he owned and operated Brown's Mobile. He lived in Eugene from 1990 until moving to Portland three months ago. His interests included golf and University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. sports. Brown was a charter member of the Springfield Country Club. He sank nine holes-in-one on the same hole. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Terri Gassman of Portland; a sister, Bea Lay of Glenwood, Ark.; and two grandchildren. No service is planned. Virgil Farris COTTAGE GROVE - Virgil Luther Farris of Cottage Grove died July 23 of age-related causes. He was 93. Farris was born July 22, 1909, in Ava, Mo., to John and Minnie Wheat Farris. He married Ava Brunson in Sacramento in 1931. She died Sept. 18, 1984. He lived in Sacramento until moving to Cottage Grove in 1970. He moved to Veneta in 1985 but later returned to Cottage Grove. Farris was a journeyman paper hanger paper hanger n. slang for a person who criminally writes and cashes "bad" checks on accounts he/she either does not have or which have no money in them. (See: fraud, forgery) and painter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and reading Western novels. Survivors include two sons, Robert of Cottage Grove, and Donald of West View, Okla.; a daughter, Joyce Nelson of Cottage Grove; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A son, Lloyd, died previously. No services are planned. Burial will be at Taylor-Lane Cemetery in Cottage Grove. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Tressie Cartwright Tressie Cartwright of Eugene died July 24 of a heart attack. She was 87. Cartwright was born June 14, 1915, in Roane County, W.Va., to William and Myrtle Pence Raines. She married William Cartwright in Beaver Falls, Pa., on March 10, 1937. He died July 9, 1983. She worked as a nurse's aide nurse's aide n. A person who assists nurses at a hospital or other medical facility in tasks requiring little or no formal training or education. for Beaver Valley Geriatric Center for 10 years. She lived in Pennsylvania until 1980, when she retired and moved to La Verne, Calif. She settled in Eugene in 1999. Cartwright enjoyed cleaning and gardening. Survivors include three daughters, Iris Wakeling of Eugene and Janet Miller and Jean Cartwright, both of Ontario, Calif.; two brothers, Ross Raines of Beaver Falls, and Russell Raines of West Virginia; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. No service is planned. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Covina, Calif. Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.
