He was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Springfield to John and Olive Rhodes Nice. He was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Nice served in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart Purple Heart U.S. medal awarded to those wounded in military action. [Am. Richard Baker Richard K. "Dick" Baker of Eugene died Oct. 14 at age 76. His family chose not to list a cause of death. He was born Feb. 3, 1927, in Eugene to James and Martha Kiger Baker. After graduating from University High School, Baker enlisted in the U.S. Army as a medical corpsman corps·man n. 1. An enlisted person in the U.S. Navy or Marines who has been trained to give first aid and basic medical treatment, especially in combat situations. 2. and served overseas during World War II. After his discharge. he resumed his studies at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. and the UO Medical School in Portland. Baker serve an internship with Southern Pacific Hospital in San Francisco and a four-year fellowship in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He married Shirley Smouse in Portland in 1954. In 1960, he returned to the family farm on Kiger Island. He operated a private practice in general surgery. He enjoyed his medical practice, fishing and hunting. Baker won numerous trapshooting trapshooting: see shooting. trapshooting Shooting sport with moving targets. A shotgun (usually 12-gauge) is used. The targets are clay disks (called pigeons) that are sprung into the air from a trap. A later variant is skeet shooting. titles and trophies. Survivors include three daughters, Martha Van Holten of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Elizabeth Baker and Debbie Baker, both of Corvallis; a son, Dick of Corvallis; a sister, Louise Wenrich of Prineville; and three grandchildren. Collom of Eugene died Oct. 16 of cancer. He was 77. He was born Nov. 21, 1925, in Roseburg to Edwin and Edna Collom. He lived in Roseburg and the Eugene-Springfield area for 60 years. Collom served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was later employed as a sawmill sawmill, installation or facility in which cut logs are sawed into standard-sized boards and timbers. The saws used in such an installation are generally of three types: the circular saw, which consists of a disk with teeth around its edge; the band saw, which worker. He enjoyed golf, traveling and being a golf caddy A plastic container that holds a CD or DVD disc for added protection. The bare disc is placed in the caddy, and the caddy is inserted into the drive. A caddy is not a jewel case. A jewel case protects the disc for transportation. A caddy protects the disc while reading and writing. . Survivors include two sisters, Hazel Lund and Grace Lawrence, both of Eugene. No public service is planned. Robert Miller A wake will be held Oct. 21 for Robert "Guy" Miller of Eugene, who died Oct. 16 of heart failure. He was 67. He was born Oct. 31, 1935, in Lee, Mass., to Homer and Stella Hill Miller. He served in the U.S. Air Force in 1956 and 1957. He lived in Eugene since 1964. Miller was the former owner and operator of The Raven, A Pub in Junction City. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Junction City, and he enjoyed golfing and reading. Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Miller of Cerritos, Calif., and Cynthia McMurry of Albany. A son, Greg, died previously. Tuesday's wake will be at 6 p.m. at The Raven, A Pub. Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Elizabeth Cooper Elizabeth Cooper of Eugene died Oct. 17 of age-related causes. She was 78. She was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Rockland, Calif., to Henry and Ada Davis Rehm. She lived in Sacramento before moving to Eugene three months ago. She was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and had a career in civil service. Cooper enjoyed watching television and volunteering for Kaiser Hospital for 15 years. Survivors include a son, John York of Eugene; a brother, Bud Rehm of Sacramento; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
