Popkin -- Visionary Pioneer Herman M. Poplin passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 26, 2002. He was a visionary pioneer in the summer camp experience, co-founding Blue Star Camps in Hendersonville, North Carolina For the city in Vance County, North Carolina, see Henderson, North Carolina. Hendersonville is a city in Henderson County, North Carolina, USA, 22 miles (35 km) southeast of Asheville. , with his brothers Harry and Ben in 1948. Throughout his life, Herman was active in the American Camping Association. He held numerous positions on both the local and national levels including serving as the region IV vice-president on the ACA National Board and as the Southeastern Section president; he was also an ACA Trustee in 1975-76. Herman was passionately committed to enriching the lives of children and adults through the camp experience. A result of his commitment was the establishment of Camping Unlimited in the late 60s and early 70s. Camping Unlimited was a program designed to offer the magic of camp to underprivileged and at-risk youth. This outstanding program was honored by an award given by the National Conference of Christians & Jews; as well as by the American Camping Association's Eleanor P. Eells Award for Program Excellence. |
