Obagi Medical Products Presents Scientific Posters on Efficacy of CLENZIderm M.D. at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Studies Show Faster Clearance of Acne Lesions Without The Need For Antibiotics

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Obagi Medical Products, Inc. (Nasdaq:OMPI), a leader in topical aesthetic and therapeutic skin health systems, announced today it is presenting two posters focusing on its CLENZIderm M.D.[TM] System, a novel treatment for acne at the 65th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) to be held February 2 - 6, in Washington, D.C.

The two posters sponsored by Obagi that focus on its system's unique patent-pending penetration capabilities are:

1. A Comparison of Patterns of Deposition of Two Formulations of Benzoyl Peroxide on the Skin and in the Follicular Ostia as Visualized by Scanning Electron Microscopy 

2. A Comparison of a Novel Benzoyl Peroxide System With a Combination Benzoyl Peroxide and Clindamycin Products: A 2-Week, Split-Face Study of Effectiveness and Tolerability

CLENZIderm M.D. is a novel, solubilized, 5% benzoyl peroxide (BPO) gel plus a 2% salicylic acid-based toner whose proprietary penetration mechanism enhances the solubility of BPO in order to allow it to more effectively and more quickly enter the follicles and reach areas where P. acnes proliferates.

Dr. David C. Wilson, Principal Investigator with The Education and Research Foundation, which conducted the clinical effectiveness and tolerability study, commented, "In a comparison of CLENZIderm M.D. to the industry standard acne treatment of BPO plus Clindamycin to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris, the study reports a more rapid reduction in inflammatory lesions in patients using CLENZIderm M.D., with a 23% clearance of inflammatory lesions in week one, compared to clearance in subjects using the BPO and Clindamycin combination of 12%."

Additionally, Dr. Wilson noted, "Over the two week period, non-inflammatory lesions also were reduced by 34% using CLENZIderm M.D., compared to only 21% reduction in subjects using the combination BPO and Clindamycin, while achieving comparable inflammatory lesion clearance at 52% versus 50% clearance with the BPO Clindamycin antibiotic."

Carlson further noted that Obagi is unique in its ability to provide a physician-dispensed model that gives physicians greater control over the treatment regime. "We believe that once dermatologists and other physicians who are focused on skin health make CLENZIderm M.D. available to their patients, they will see first hand the efficacy that can be achieved without the need for antibiotics."

Both products in the study were well tolerated, and although CLENZIderm users did initially experience more stinging, none of the patients rated it as more than "mild." Obagi's CLENZIderm System is being introduced at the AAD and will be available through dispensing physicians throughout the United States later this month.

Posters will be presented in Hall C at the Washington Convention Center, and will be available for viewing by meeting attendees beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 2. Poster presenters will be available at even-number poster displays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 3, and at odd-numbered poster displays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 4.
