OZONE SOARS IN HEAT OFFICIALS KEEP WATCH FOR FIRE, UNHEALTHY POLLUTION.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Extra teams of firefighters were assigned Tuesday to the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. , where a hot and dry spell has the county Fire Department on alert.

With high temperatures in the mid-90s and a wind picking up, the fire danger was elevated. A winter of heavy rain has left abundant grass and other vegetation that dried quickly once summer hit.

The region also has been hit with a dose of air pollution - with the past two days termed ``unhealthful for sensitive groups'' by the South Coast Air Quality Management District The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), formed in 1976, is the air pollution agency responsible mainly for regulating stationary sources of air pollution for most of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside County, and all of Orange county. . Those with respiratory diseases such as asthma are advised to limit their time outdoors.
