The couple, represented by separate attorneys, pleaded not guilty Friday and face a preliminary hearing in Ventura Municipal Court on Dec. 20.

Prosecutors also charged the couple in a Juvenile Court juvenile court

complaint with torture and four counts of felony child abuse alleged to have occurred in 1994.

Rogelio Hernandez, 19, and Gabriela Hernandez, 18, were minors at the time of the alleged offenses in the juvenile complaint. They have pleaded not guilty in the Juvenile Court case and face a hearing in January when prosecutors will seek to have the couple face trial as adults.

Corona said the charges in the juvenile complaint are serious and that the two cases should be combined.

``They are separate cases because there were different injuries and different time periods,'' she explained.

Corona would not comment on the alleged crimes. ``I think the charges speak for themselves.''

The prosecutor also wouldn't comment on the decision by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office to file charges more than two years after the alleged abuse was first reported by the Oxnard Police Department.

Joselin was born May 30, 1994, and died June 22 of this year, Corona said.

Police arrested the couple in November and they have remained in custody in the county jail. On Monday, Judge Steven Hintz increased bail for each from $250,000 to $500,000 at the prosecutor's request.

The couple were charged with both murder and felony child abuse causing death. Prosecutors also charged the parents with five counts of felony child abuse after the autopsy revealed the additional injuries throughout the child's body Noun 1. child's body - the body of a human child

The juvenile complaint was filed at the same time based on information from injuries the girl suffered in 1994.
