 FOR COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES
 OXFORD, England, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Oxford GlycoSystems (OGS) today announced it has developed an innovative instrument system to map oligosaccharides, a class of molecules commonly known as complex carbohydrates. The product, GlycoMap(TM) 1000, is one of the first instruments dedicated solely to carbohydrate analysis work. It is OGS's second instrument system.
 "In conjunction with our first product, the GlycoPrep(TM) 1000, this represents the first systematic approach to carbohydrate preparation and analysis. With our RAAM(TM) Sequencer, available in 1993, OGS will have the preferred, complete solution all the way from preparation, fractionation to structure determination," said Dale Pfost, Ph.D., president and CEO of OGS. "The GlycoPrep 1000 and the GlycoMap 1000 represent a powerful combination; it is the first logical system for carbohydrate-related research."
 The GlycoMap 1000 will be used in a wide range of biotechnology and pharmaceutical research. Until now it has been exceedingly difficult to analyze and purify carbohydrates and the predictability and reliability of existing non-carbohydrate dedicated systems has been limited. The ability to scientifically explore carbohydrates will accelerate research into such diseases as rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS and cancer. It will also be used in the quality assurance/quality control of glycoprotein drugs emerging from biotechnology companies.
 The GlycoMap 1000's chromatographic separation is on the basis of the size of the carbohydrate molecule. The inter- and intra-laboratory reproducibility will allow scientific results to be published and compared, thus laying the ground-work for rapid scientific progress. Mapping carbohydrates with the GlycoMap 1000 is both analytical and preparative, resulting in meaningful data as well as a size fractionated set of pure oligosaccharides for further experimental work.
