OWENS-CORNING TO INCREASE LAMINATOR CAPACITY

TOLEDO, Ohio, May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Owens-Corning (NYSE: OCF) will add a new laminator to its Brookville, Ind., roofing plant, announced Larry T. Solari, president of Owens-Corning's Construction Products Group.
The laminator capacity will allow more production of the Oakridge(R) and Oakridge Shadow series of architectural shingles. These shingles feature a heart of Fiberglas mat for superior weatherability.
"This new laminator will double our national laminated shingle capacity," said Solari. While it will increase capacity nationwide, the new laminator will have the greatest impact on the Northeast, East and Midwest sales districts which are served by the Brookville facility.
"This capacity increase will also allow increased growth in architectural shingles," continued Solari. "The market demand for architectural shingles is growing at about 25 percent per year.
"This capacity increase will allow us to meet our customers' growing volume requirements and help us position our customers with a high- styled, trade up product that consumers and contractors are seeking to meet a growing demand for aesthetics. The project is on a `fast track' plan and will be operational in the first quarter of 1994," said Solari.
The roofing market has good, long-term growth prospects based on the anticipated increases in reroofing and a continued steady recovery in new housing starts.
The reroofing market represents 75 percent of residential shingle demand with new construction accounting for the balance. On average, a home needs a new roof every 17 years which is driving the reroofing requirements.
