The improvements--which include support for local-online "Hybrid" configurations, and an intranet-integration feature called "Jumpstart"--are part of Ovid's new software Release 7.8. The new version is available now to Ovid Online customers, and has been shipped on CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

and local network configurations. "A number of our local customers are already running Release 7.8 in production, and we've heard a lot of very positive feedback from them," said Dana Johnson, Ovid's vice president of Software Development. "In this release, we're introducing features that will give Ovid customers an unprecedented level of flexibility in terms of configuring access to Ovid and integrating it with other resources." Two of the new Ovid features in particular--Hybrid and Jumpstart--are unique in the bibliographic and full text database industry. OVID HYBRID SOLUTION ADDS REMOTE DATABASES TO LOCAL UNIX UNIX

like Medline or PsycINFO on its local server, and link from the citations and abstracts to full text journal articles in the 350+ title Journals@Ovid database via Ovid Online. To the user, the search session is completely integrated, with seamless linking between local and online databases. For the organization, gigabytes of server space can be reallocated, and the system administrator saves the hours of updating and disk management time needed to offer full text on a local server. "Hybrid is a very exciting new option for local Ovid sites," said Johnson. "We got great feedback from the many beta sites An organization or group that is beta testing hardware and/or software. See beta test.  who tested the feature, and we made a lot of enhancements as a direct result of those customers' experiences." JUMPSTART URLS STREAMLINE ACCESS AND INTEGRATE OVID WITH LOCAL INTRANETS Enhanced in Release 7.8, Jumpstart is a tool for integrating Ovid with local Web-based resources and services. Using Jumpstart, a system administrator can create links that "jump" a user from a page on the organization's intranet or Web site directly to any specific point within an Ovid search session. Jumpstart links can log in users automatically, execute saved searches, retrieve specific full text journal articles, and deliver a wide range of other benefits, with only a single mouse click by the user. "Many of our customers have been asking for ways to more tightly integrate Ovid resources into their local Web pages," said Johnson. "With Jumpstart, a librarian can easily create a link which quickly takes the user to the latest issue of a journal, the definitive review article on an important topic, or any other place in the Ovid system." Other highlights of Release 7.8 include interface enhancements to improve full text display and graphics, improved accuracy of keyword searches created in one database and re-run in a different database, the ability to customize the way bibliographic citations are displayed on-screen on·screen or on-screen
