Heard will take a seat at the end of the Vikings' bench and watch a game in which he fully expected to play. It will be an unfamiliar vantage point, to say the least. Heard has been a top varsity basketball player since his freshman year and the heart and soul of a team determined to end a spectacular era with a perfect record and a state championship. The senior guard is not used to sitting and watching. But a serious abdominal abdominal /ab·dom·i·nal/ (ab-dom´i-n'l) pertaining to the abdomen. ab·dom·i·nal adj. Of or relating to the abdomen. n. An abdominal muscle. injury Heard suffered during a scrimmage in late January changed all that. Heard planted himself under the basket and took a charge from teammate Joe Ford. It was an innocent play that happens countless times during a season with little consequence. This time was different. Ford's knee dug into Heard's stomach, knocking Heard to the floor. Heard eventually got up, and even drove himself home after practice. But he knew something was seriously wrong. ``My back was killing me. I couldn't get over the feeling I got the wind knocked out of me,'' Heard remembers. Heard's father, a prominent trauma surgeon in the area, happened to be home that afternoon. Jonathan Heard was convalescing from injuries he suffered in a car accident a few days before, but it wasn't long before he realized something was dramatically wrong with his only child. ``He said 'Dad, I don't feel good. My back's killing me, I'm having a hard time breathing,' '' Jonathan Heard said. ``And once he started vomiting vomiting, ejection of food and other matter from the stomach through the mouth, often preceded by nausea. The process is initiated by stimulation of the vomiting center of the brain by nerve impulses from the gastrointestinal tract or other part of the body. , I knew right away something was wrong.'' Heard was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital Holy Cross Hospital may refer to: In the United Kingdom:
In fact, Heard was just recently released from the hospital, and he hasn't yet returned to school, although he hopes to be back after Easter break. As for the team for which he was such an integral and emotional part, Heard has seen it play just once since the injury. Heard attended the Vikings' first-round Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. As you can imagine, Heard can't wait to get to Sacramento today to watch the Vikings (31-0), although Campbell Hall coach Terry Kelly might be wise to buckle his senior guard to the bench. Heard is so pumped up about today's game he can't guarantee he'll abide by doctor's orders "Doctor's Orders" is the title of an episode from the third season of the television series . It will take all of Kelly's restraint not to rush Heard into the game. Kelly and Heard have formed a special bond during the past four years, and it's only strengthened since the injury. I mean that also as a person, because he's pretty special.'' The feeling is mutual. ``This man has a job, he has a family and he has a basketball team to coach,'' said Cynthia Heard, Jason's mother. ``Yet there he was day after day at Jason's bedside in the hospital. You can't even imagine what that feels like as a parent. Coach Kelly went above and beyond the call of duty, and we'll never forget that.'' Two people were injured on that January afternoon. For one, it will take the care of a team of doctors and incredible personal determination to fully recover. For the other, the emotional scars might take a bit longer to heal. Ford is Heard's best friend. They have been teammates since their freshman year and have spent the last four years dreaming about hoisting a state championship trophy together, then going off to college to continue their careers. It was Ford rising in the air that afternoon at practice, going hard to the basket just as he always does. Even in his wounded state, Heard could sense his friend's feeling of responsibility. ``He was pretty torn up, I could see that,'' Heard said. ``But it wasn't his fault, and I told him that and I made sure he understood it. I mean, come on, it was as freak an injury as you can imagine. He was doing his job and I was doing mine. It just happened. He needed to know that it was just one of those things you can't explain.'' Ford hasn't completely mended from that day, but he has been able to channel his hurt and anger into production on the court. Ford, a 6-7 forward headed to University of the Pacific, has elevated his game with each passing postseason game with his scoring, rebounding and leadership. Ford, more than anyone else, has fueled the Vikings' remarkable run. But he knows he has had help. ``Everything we do as a team is for Jason,'' Ford said. ``He isn't able to play, but he's in our hearts and he's still a major part of what we do. When I go on the court, he's still there.'' Jason Heard hasn't picked up a basketball since the injury. It has too much power over him. ``I'm afraid I might do something stupid by doing something before I'm really able to,'' Heard said. ``In due time I will. Just not yet.'' Slowly, surely, Heard is coming back. Heard is coping the best he can. His focus is on continuing his career in college - he said Northeastern has shown interest, among others - and that keeps him going. Today, it is about rooting on his Campbell Hall teammates. ``I want to be out there,'' Heard said. ``Ever since we were freshmen, we dreamed of holding up a championship trophy together. It's disappointing that I'm not a part of it in terms of being on the court, but I'm glad I'll be there. I wouldn't miss this for anything.''
