OUTSIDE COUNSEL WILL REVIEW DOG-FOOD CASE.

Byline: Daily News

The Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  voted Tuesday to seek outside counsel to review the case of a black firefighter tricked into eating dog food and advise whether to settle or fight in court.

Councilman Greig Smith Greig Smith is a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 12th District, which includes Granada Hills, Northridge and other parts of the Western San Fernando Valley. Smith is also a reserve officer for the Los Angeles Police Department.  said he wanted another review since the city attorney has strongly advised the city to settle the case with Tennie Pierce.

Smith said he wanted a second opinion ``on whether this is defensible de·fen·si·ble

in court, which I and others believe it is.''

In November, the council voted to pay Pierce $2.7 million to settle. He claims he was served dog food in his spaghetti by co-workers and supervisors, who then retaliated and tried to cover up their actions when he complained. But after photos of Pierce hazing colleagues surfaced, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Antonio Ramon Villaraigosa (born Antonio (Tony) Ramon Villar, Jr. on January 23, 1953) is the mayor of Los Angeles, California. He is the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles since Cristobal Aguilar in 1872.  vetoed the settlement, and the council reversed its earlier decision to pay off the claim.

The case could go to court in March, but some council members have left open the possibility it could be settled before then if the city attorney and Pierce's lawyer can reach an agreement. But Smith and other council members said they haven't been privy to any settlement discussions.

``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if the council is willing to settle for anything,'' Smith said. ``We'll have to see if a settlement comes forward and if it's acceptable.''
