Sporting clays Sporting Clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting. Often described as golf with a shotgun, the sport differs from trap and skeet shooting in that:

1. It is considered by many to be more difficult than trap or skeet.

: Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Quail Unlimited's dove season warm-up shooting contest takes place Sunday at Moore & Moore Sporting Clays, 12651 N. Little Tujunga Canyon Road in Lake View Terrace.

All shooters are welcome and each contestant will receive 100 bird rounds of sporting clays and lunch. Divisions include men's A, B and C (scored Lewis class), women's, youth and a Quail Unlimited chapter teams (selected the day of the event).

Registration begins at 8 a.m.; shooting starts at 9 a.m. The cost is $70 for men, $65 for women and $60 for ages 16 and under. Information: Derek Fong, (805) 297-0876, daytime, or (805) 296-3966, evenings.

Funds raised from the event will go toward building and maintaining man-made watering devices for fowl in the local mountains. Quail Unlimited is a nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

Notes:

Western bass classic: From Sunday to Wednesday, 70 of the top bass anglers in the West will be fishing at Lake Nacimiento, northwest of Paso Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:

Tuna seminar: Fishing experts will discuss tuna-fishing tactics at 7 p.m. today at Turner's Outdoorsman, 18808 Brookhurst in Fountain Valley. Admission is free; reservations are required. Information: (714) 965-5151.

Also, a seminar on regional saltwater fishing by angling aficionado A Spanish word that means fan, devotee, enthusiast, etc. There are loyal aficionados of every subject in the computer field.  Ronnie Kovach will be offered at the same store at 7 p.m. Aug. 22.

Turning to trout: Ted Turner, empire builder, has a more modest goal these days: becoming a better fisherman.

Since he was introduced to fly-fishing by a Wyoming rancher friend 10 years ago, Turner said, he has worked hard at mastering the sport.
