Young guns: The North Hollywood Sportsman's Club Youth Shooting Team - thought to feature the state's only youth trap team - will compete Sunday at the Oak Tree Gun Club, 23121 N. Coltrane Ave. in Newhall, during an interclub competition between several area shooting groups. The event, which pits primarily adult shooters in a round-robin format, runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Triathletes unite: More than 1,500 active competitors, celebrities, musicians and ``weekend warriors'' will join athletic efforts Sept. 19 in Malibu to raise funds to battle AIDS during the 13th annual Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Racing begins at 7:15 a.m.

Fishing emergency: The 911 B.A.S.S. Club, a fishing coterie of mainly peace officers and firefighters, is hosting a team bass-angling tournament Sept. 25 at Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  to raise funds for Bassin' For Abused Kids.

Bassin' For Abused Kids assists neglected and underprivileged youth in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and around the country.

Season finale: The Castaic Bass Club hosts its final nighttime team derby of the year Friday starting at 8 p.m. at Castaic Lake. Register for the $105 event by 7 that evening at the upper lake's west ramp. Angling will continue until 2 a.m. Saturday.

All night long: The $1,000 All-Night Catfish Derby returns to Irvine Lake, 4621 Santiago Canyon Road in Silverado, from 5 p.m. Sept. 18 to 3 a.m. Sept. 19. The largest catfish taken at the Orange County fish-for-a-fee facility, is worth $500. Fish dinner: United Anglers of Southern California, a marine-fisheries conservation group, is hosting its sixth annual informal dinner Sept. 21 at the Grand, 4101 E. Willow St. in Long Beach. A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m., with dinner to follow at 7.

    Angling's gender gap: Betty Bauman, founder of Ladies, Let's Go Fishing, reveals in Boating magazine's September issue the top five reasons why women don't fish: Men won't share their fishing secrets; a lack of knowledge about fishing and boating; the fish are too slimy; nobody will fish with them; men yell.

    Tag news: More than 5,000 bear tags have sold in the past three weeks, meaning 4,500 tags remain in the quota of 18,000, according to the Department of Fish and Game. This rate increases as the bear-season opener for rifle shooters approaches, and hunters wishing to secure a bear tag for this year are encouraged to order one soon.

    Meanwhile, all D-zone tags leftover from initial applications have been available as of Sept. 1. Zones D-6 and D-12 are sold out; few tags remain available for Zones D-9 and D-17. Information: (562) 590-5132.
