New anglers: Some 260 youths and group counselors will take part in the 47th annual Los Angeles Rod & Reel Club Kids' Fishing Trip set for Monday out of Santa Barbara's Sea Landing.

The participants are primarily disadvantaged youths, ages 8 to 16, from throughout Southern California who might not otherwise have the opportunity to go ocean fishing. For most, it will be their first angling experience, as well as their first time at sea.

There will be 13 groups, including the Boys and Girls boys and girls

Some 70 volunteer deckhands from the club will help the young anglers target calico bass, sand bass and barracuda barracuda, slender, elongated fish of tropical seas. Barracudas have long snouts and projecting lower jaws armed with large, sharp-edged teeth. They are ferocious, striking at anything that gleams, and are considered excellent game fishes. , and then will bag, fillet and package the catch.

Club members have been working for months to assemble and repair fishing tackle and prepare food, drinks and prizes that will be used for the event. Financial assistance has come from the Los Angeles Rod & Reel Club Foundation and the Los Angeles County Fish and Game Commission, as well as Southland businesses and individuals.

Bikers unite: Mountain Bike Adventure Week, featuring a wide range of cycling activities for riders of all ages and levels of expertise, takes place Wednesday through July 21 at Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra.

There will be cross-country challenges of 10-, 20- and 30-mile loops (with a $25 entry fee), kids rides, night treks, family relays, downhill contests, tours to historic locales, a barbecue and live music.

Penny Davidson, a two-time NORBA national champion, will lead group rides departing from the Bear Valley Bike Shop, 40298 Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear Lake, at 4 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. Also on Saturday, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., she will head up a kids' mountain bike rodeo behind the Big Bear Lake Chamber Building at 630 Bartlett Road.

Night tourney: Anglers will be descending upon Castaic Lake on Saturday for the second in a series of three nighttime bass fishing tournaments.

Registration takes place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the lake's west ramp. Entry is $100 per two-person team. The contest will be administered by the WON BASS-Southern California Region staff.

The events, called Night Bass Classics, are hosted by and benefit the Friends of Castaic Lake, a nonprofit group established to enhance the fish habitat and improve the facilities at Los Angeles County's busiest recreation area. The final tournament in the series is Aug. 24.

Cats and bass: The fourth annual All American Bass & Catfish Classic takes place through Sept. 8 at Corona Lake in Riverside County and Santa Ana River The Santa Ana River begins in San Bernardino County, California in the San Bernardino National Forest. Its highest source lakes are Dollar Lake (9220') and Dry Lake (9065'), both on the northern flank of San Gorgonio Mountain (11,502') in the San Gorgonio Wilderness.  Lakes in Orange County.

Thousands of dollars will be awarded to anglers who catch tagged fish. Every Saturday, the fisher who snags the heaviest catfish wins $100. Night fishing will be offered Aug. 3 and Aug. 31. And special catfish tournaments will be held July 20, Aug. 3 and Aug. 31.

Running events: A running and shooting biathlon biathlon (bīăth`lŏn), sport in which cross-country skiers race across hilly terrain, occasionally stopping to shoot with rifles at sets of fixed targets. Sunday's 5K run over the area's cross-country ski trail system begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 10K commences at 9:30 a.m.

Boat show: The 13th annual American Boating Jubilee will stretch out along the Shoreline Greenbelt and the Downtown Long Beach Marina from July 19-28.

The all-outdoor show will feature 600 new and used boats, including personal watercraft, inflatables, water ski boats, fishing vessels and luxury yachts, along with some 150 recreation vehicles.

Show hours are noon to 8 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $7 for adults; children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Information: (714) 633-7581.
