All roads lead to lunch: The Wheelmen Bicycle Club hosts its annual Brookside picnic this Sunday, a socializer that begins near Griffith Park. The club offers three separate bike routes, varying from a short course to a longer, hilly path which goes through Altadena by way of Chevy Chase. They all wind up at Brookside Park, near the Rose Bowl. Pack a lunch or buy one at the snack bar near the Brookside golf course; the club supplies cold drinks and desserts. Swap meet: Rods, reels and other unwanted fishing tackle will be for sale at the Fishermen's Spot swap meet this Sun. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the store's parking lot, 14423 Burbank Blvd. in Van Nuys. Spaces are available to vendors on a first-come basis, so if you've cleaned out your used tackle, now's the time to sell or recycle. No new tackle or tackle dealers will be allowed. Loneliness of the long-distance runner: Five years of drought have decimated the Tarahumara Indians, a tribe of 40,000 from Copper Canyon in northern Mexico. This Saturday, six of the Tarahumara, a tribe considered to be among the world's greatest long-distance runners - they have been known to run down a deer by simply outlasting it - will run a 100-mile footrace over the mountainous terrain of the Angeles Crest National Forest, competing with top U.S. marathon runners in an effort to raise money to feed their starving families. Centennial Catfish: Orange County Harbors, Beach and Parks, along with the DFG, will feature a special catfish derby for young and novice adult anglers, capping a 5-month long Irvine Regional Park centennial celebration. The park's small fishing pond will be amply stocked with 1-lb. channel cats, and beginners can learn fish life-cycle and habitat requirements, along with the techniques needed to bait and cast. The first 400 participants will receive a tackle bag stuffed with hooks, sinkers, lures and other fishing items.
