Stalking the wild rhino: Former California Yacht Club Commodore Frank M. Gleberman and 30 fellow yacht club members recently returned from a three-week photo safari in East Africa, where they witnessed feeding lion prides, cheetahs fending off scavengers and crocodiles hunting zebra.

These sights and more were captured on slides and videotape and will be shared with the public on Nov. 20 at the California Yacht Club luncheon at 4469 Admiralty Way in Marina del Rey. Happy hour starts at 11:30 a.m. and the buffet lunch starts at 12:10 p.m. No reservations are required, but space is limited. Cost is $11.25, including parking.

Fishing the pyramid: The third 1997-98 WON BASS Southern California regional tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Lake Pyramid. Pyramid has a large bass population, and when the water level rises, the fish generally move to the shallower waters. At a winter tournament several years ago, Carol and Aaron Martens of West Hills won by throwing topwater bait in the backs of coves.

Last year's big bass weighed only 2.87 pounds, but fish weighing up to 14 pounds have been caught in the lake.

More oinkers: Southland pig-hunting prospects have taken a turn for the better, thanks to a new cooperative program opening public lands long closed to hunters.

Considerable property damage by feral pigs in the San Timoteo Canyon and Santa Ana River areas of Riverside County has prompted officials to develop a hunting program to reduce populations.

Controlled hunts will be held on an as-needed basis at limited locations. To participate, mail a standard-size postcard to: Wild Pig Hunt, Department of Fish and Game, 330 Golden Shore Blvd., Suite 50, Long Beach, Calif. 90802. The applicant's name, address, telephone number, hunting-license number and chosen method of hunting - archery or shotgun - must be included.

All successful applicants must pay a $25 fee and attend a pre-hunt orientation to take part.

Advanced anglers: College of the Canyons' Community Services Department is offering a four-week course on advanced bass fishing techniques. The 8-hour course is designed to help anglers improve their fishing skills at all levels and includes instruction on the use of specialty equipment, bait customizing, big fish techniques and tournament tactics.

The class runs four consecutive Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning Nov. 25. Cost is $39. Information: [phone].

Historical fishing: The International Game Fishing Association's new home in Pompano Beach, Fla. will feature a gallery of beautiful fishing places, and you're invited to contribute memorabilia.

The gallery is looking for any items of historic significance from your favorite fishing sites, including posters, tournament brochures and even pens, glasses and other collectibles.

The IGFA would prefer older collectibles (from the 1930s to 1970s), but will also accept modern items for display.
