The crew of Valencia's George Castro and Los Angeles flatfishers Miguel Zamora, Glen Kalsaki and Roy Nishiyama placed first in the team division.

On to bass: The final tournament of the WON BASS-Southern California Region's 1996-97 season drew 71 teams to Castaic Lake and was captured by Mike Hamilton of Valencia and Jim Witowski of Castaic. The duo landed a seven-fish limit of largemouths weighing 25.77 pounds for a purse of $2,040.

Finishing second were Michael Knight and Tim Edington of Bakersfield with a limit weighing 20.76 pounds for $1,550. Third and $1,290 went to Greg Stump of Newbury Park and Matt Clancy of Simi Valley for their 20.29-pound limit. Big-fish honors went to the team of Bill Sobol of Ontario and Bob Hicks of Mira Loma for their 9.62-pound bucketmouth, which earned them $350.

Jim Olivarez of Anaheim and La Habra's Frank King were crowned regional champions. In all, the region produced 44 qualifying teams for the Tri-States Team Championship, July 9-12 at Lake Mead.

Classic trout: The 15th anniversary of the May Trout Classic will be staged Saturday and Sunday at Big Bear Lake.

More than 4,300 pounds of fish will be stocked in the lake for the event, which features some $4,800 in prizes. A check for $1,800 goes to the angler who fetches the heaviest prize.

Two years ago, a lake record 14.69-pound trout was boated during the annual contest. The field is limited to 400 anglers; entry is $40. Information: (909) 866-6260.

Waterworld: The Great American Outdoors Show and Demo Days will be held Friday through Sunday at Irvine Lake in Orange County.

The show will feature more than 275 boats, from kayaks and yachts to fishing vessels Customary International Law provides that coastal fishing boats and small boats engaged in trade, as distinguished from seagoing fishing boats and large traders, are immune from attack and seizure during war. Surfing update: Anthony Petruso of Malibu captured first place last weekend in the 13- to 14-year-old division of the National Scholastic Surfing Association The National Scholastic Surfing Association (N.S.S.A.) is a surfing association in the United States. It is the highest level for competitive amateur surfing in the country.  Southwest Conference explorer event at Ponto Beach, south of Carlsbad.
