All tied up: One trout worth $632 was hooked by two anglers at the same time and brought to shore.

``It was verified,'' said Juanita Heinly, spokeswoman for the Adult Spring Fishing Derby, held Saturday at Lancaster's Apollo Park. She laughed at the predicament, one of several highlights of the 15th annual event that drew 496 entrants chasing a purse of $3,950 - half the entry fees. (The other half of the gate will be used to purchase trout for the 26th annual free Youth Fishing Derby to be staged May 2 at Apollo Park.)

Judges honored the 4-pound catch and split the third-place winnings between the anglers - Ken Helstowski of Lancaster and Miguel Mata of Mira Loma.

The day's heaviest rainbow - a 5.4-pounder - fetched a whopping $1,580 for Larry Layton Jr. of Acton. Second-place and $790 went to Daniel Medina of Fillmore for his 4.11-pound catch.

Other winners: fourth place - Greg Holt, Quartz Hill, 3.3 pounds, $474; fifth place - George Papez, Glendora, 3.14 pounds, $316; sixth place - Ron Del Mese, Lancaster, 3.11 pounds, $158.

Fly-Fishing 101: The annual Sierra Pacific Flyfishers free, four-part fly-casting course begins Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Reseda Park, 18411 Victory Blvd. in Reseda.

Following sessions will be held at the park in the same time frame on March 21 and March 28. The program concludes April 4 on Piru Creek with on-stream instruction and a barbecue.

Some 40 club volunteers will teach the basics of fly-casting using instructional videos, demonstrations and hands-on technique. Students will need their own fly rods and equipment, although the club has a few ``loaner'' outfits available. High quality, low-cost beginner fly-fishing outfits are available at most area tackle shops, according to Irwin Goldbloom, the club's education chairman.

In addition to casting instruction, students will attend brief sessions on conservation, entomology, knot-tying, fly-tying and rod building.

The SPFF fly-casting course has been conducted since 1986 and attracts about 100 students each spring. Information: [phone].

Auction action: The annual Super Auction of the Wilderness Fly Fishers of Santa Monica will be held Tuesday at the Olympic Collection, 11301 Olympic Blvd. in West Los Angeles.

The silent auction is at 6 p.m., followed by the live auction at 7:45 p.m. More than 30 fishing trips and 100 tackle items valued in excess of $50,000 will be auctioned. Dinner is $23 with advance reservations, $28 without. Information: [phone].

New regs: Changes to largemouth bass-angling regulations impacting two area reservoirs went on the Department of Fish and Game books March 1.

At Castaic Lake, fish must be 18 inches in length and only two may be taken per day. Meanwhile, at Lake Casitas in Ventura County, no more than one black bass 22 inches or longer may be in possession, but you can still take home a daily limit of five bass measuring at least 12 inches.

According to the DFG, increased minimum size limits and reduced bag limits are intended to reduce black bass harvest and promote higher quality fishing opportunities at these lakes.

Local talent: Kudos to three anglers who have been recognized by the International Game Fish Association for world-record catches taken in local waters.

Kenneth K. Denette's 10-pound, 12-ounce calico bass caught June 1 out of Malibu's Paradise Cove is the new standard for 12-pound line. The 13-pound, 1-ounce California yellowtail hooked Aug. 17 by Sandy Peck at San Clemente Island is now the women's mark for 8-pound line. And the 9-pound Pacific bonito landed Aug. 24 by Don B. Walker out of San Diego is the fly-fishing record for 4-pound tippet.

Talking turkey: Turkey-hunting expert Jimmie Rizzo will be conducting a series of three turkey hunting seminars at Turner's Outdoorsman stores in Southern California.
