has confirmed that Lahontan cutthroat, the native trout of the Lake Tahoe Basin, has become re-established in the Upper Truckee River after a 57-year absence, according to the Department of Fish and Game.

Unable to compete successfully with other trout species, the fish disappeared from Lake Tahoe and its tributaries in the late 1930s. In 1990, the DFG removed non-native trout from the headwaters of the Upper Truckee and restocked it with pure Lahontan cutthroats. Surveys now reveal a population of about 1,500 cutthroats.

The stream has been closed to fishing since 1991. A recommendation to reopen it to catch-and-release angling is under consideration. Information: Chuck Knutson of the DFG's Inland Fisheries Division, (916) 653-5944.
