Heine was recently recognized by the International Game Fish Association for the 44-pound cat he landed Oct. 12, 1995, at Irvine Lake. The fish broke the old record in the 16-pound line class of 41-1/2 pounds caught in Nebraska in 1985.

Mad dash: Street luge enthusiasts will congregate Friday at Castaic Lake State Park for the Castaic Ridge 180 Dash, a 1.1-mile race in which luge luge (lzh), a type of small sled on which one or two persons, lying face up, slide feet first down snowy hillsides or down steeply banked, curving, iced chutes similar to those used in  ``pilots'' propel themselves, side by side, at speeds of more than 65 mph.

The event is the second of four preliminary rounds in the series Road to the Games, in which racers attempt to qualify for ESPN's X Games X Games Sports medicine The official Olympics of 'extreme sports' sponsored by ESPN, held annually during the summer. Set sail: The Westlake Yacht Club is getting ready for the second of three holiday sailing races, the Turkey Day Regatta.

Despite its name, the event is actually being held Sunday, on Westlake Lake in Westlake Village.

Registration will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and the white starting flag will be hoisted at 12:30 p.m., winds and weather permitting. The entry fee is $5.

The club held the Trick or Treat Regatta last month and will host the Kris Kringle Regatta in December. A trophy is presented to the sailor who accrues the most points over the series. Last year, 16-year-old Agoura High junior Lindsay Artof was the champion.

Monster trout: Frank Lopez of Riverside was the hero of the Nov. 9 trout season opener at Irvine Lake as he reeled in a 9.85-pound Mount Lassen rainbow, the day's biggest prize.

The Orange County pay-for-a-fee lake has been stocked with more than 25,000 pounds of Mount Lassen rainbows, trophies of which are the so-called ``Super trout.'' Information: (714) 649-9111 or (714) 460-4940.

The mall was built in 1974 after the completion of the Pomona Freeway a few years earlier.

Archers rejoice: While most Southern California buck-hunting zones close this month, DFG officials have announced that archers with appropriate tags can continue to hunt for a longer period of time.

The special archery hunts A22 and A23, now underway in Los Angeles and San Diego counties, will remain opened through Jan. 31. Furthermore, for the first time, these tags are available over the counter at DFG offices - in Long Beach at 330 Golden Shore Blvd., and in San Diego at 4949 View Ridge Ave.

Half of the 2,000 Los Angeles antlerless archery hunt tag allotment remains to be issued. Resident deer tags cost $17.35. A second tag is $21.80.
