Dog teaches woman new tricks: Dazzling a crowd of more than 12,000 with flips and high-speed agility, 3-year old border collie Ariel Asah and her person, Melissa Heeter - both of Cartersville, Georgia - took the 1997 Alpo Canine Frisbee disc world champion title Saturday, beating 16 other finalists and their owners in Washington, D.C. Fifth place honors went to Pon Saradeth and Owen Boy of Orange. Jim Stafford and Madison of Pasadena took seventh. Ping Latvong and Trixie of Anaheim placed 10th.

Keep it clean: The State Parks Association, Coastal Commission, Caltrans and other state and corporate sponsors will work with volunteers to tackle lagoon and beach litter Saturday, which is Coastal Cleanup Day throughout California. Viva la angling: The 17th annual World Fly Fishing Competition ended in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Sept. 7 with the French team claiming top honors, followed by Belgium and Italy. England, Canada, Slovakia, Poland, Norway and Japan all placed ahead of the United States, which finished the international tournament in the 15th spot.

Membership drive: The West Valley Sportsmen's Club, the oldest club in the San Fernando Valley, is conducting its annual membership drive. The club organizes local monthly fishing charters and summer tuna trips, and meets the second Thursday of each month at 6543 Corbin Ave. in Woodland Hills. Annual dues are $25. Whiskerfish galore: The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation sponsors a fishing derby at Santa Fe Dam, 15501 E. Arrow Hwy. in Irwindale, complete with a fresh stock of 1,650 1-pound catfish. The event takes place from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday and includes derby prizes, a crafts fair and a free hamburger lunch for those 15 and younger. A special DFG starter's kit will be provided, along with instruction in fishing, fish ecology and angling safety. Rods and reels are available on loan, and hooks, bait and leader are free.
