OUTDOORS BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Ocean coho season options for 2007 announced Ocean salmon anglers could have as few as 15,000 and as many as 50,000 fin-clipped coho to harvest this season in the South of Cape Falcon management zone, under season options proposed last week by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council. Option I calls for a harvest quota of 50,000 fin-marked coho, while Option II provides for a quota of 40,000. Under both options, fishing would be allowed June 23 through Sept. 16 - except the area from Humbug Mountain to the Oregon/California Border will be closed to all salmon fishing beginning Sept. 4 or 5. Option III would allow fishing June 23-Aug. 19, or until 15,000 fish were harvested. Last year, anglers were given a quota of 20,000 coho and a six-week season. A final decision on the 2007 selective coho season will be made next month following public hearings in several West Coast cities. Meanwhile, the "all salmon except coho" season in the South of Falcon zone opens March 15. Angler education instructor training session set The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will hold a March 24 training session in Eugene for volunteers who would like to become instructors in its Angler and Aquatic Education Program. The program provides "an opportunity for folks who love fishing to share their passion with others," coordinator Chris Willard said. The program teaches angling skills, angler ethics and responsibilities, water safety and basic aquatic ecology to children and adults. Volunteer instructors, who must be at least 21 years old, will learn how best to share their fishing expertise with others. `Getting involved in the Angler and Aquatic Education Program is a great way to give back to the sport,' Willard said. Potential volunteers are asked to call Willard at (503) 947-6017 or e-mail him at: chris.a.willard@state.or.us. Nearby Nature plans orientation for volunteers Nearby Nature, a Eugene nonprofit educational group, will hold a volunteer orientation session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at EWEB, 500 E. Fourth Ave., Eugene. Among the volunteer opportunities available this spring is leading school nature walks in Alton Baker Park. Free training is provided. Details: 687-9699. Classic surf film to be featured at `movie night' "Riding Giants," a classic surf documentary about an alternative lifestyle in Hawaii and California during the late 1950s and early 1960s, will be screened Wednesday, at a "movie night" sponsored by the Eugene Outdoor Program. The free screening is set for 7 p.m. at the River House, 301 N. Adams St. FISHING, HUNTING & WILDLIFE VIEWING Rivers and streams: The winter steelhead run is beginning to wind down in some coastal streams, but anglers are still catching fair numbers of fish in the Siuslaw and Umpqua rivers, among others. Anglers trolling herring are picking up a few spring chinook salmon in the lower Willamette River, where good numbers of keeper sturgeon are also being taken. Steelhead counts over Willamette Falls have picked up over the last couple of weeks and fresh fish are being caught near Salem. Lakes: Due to colder than normal water temperatures that slowed the growth of hatchery trout, fish stocking scheduled for Cottage Grove Pond, Creswell Pond (Garden Lake), and Cottage Grove, Dorena and Dexter reservoirs has been delayed until later this month. Marine zone: Angler activity and success has been very good in the ocean when weather conditions permit. The majority of fish taken are rockfish and lingcod. Bay crabbing remains poor to fair. - Compiled from ODFW and Register-Guard reports.
