Paddle tours of Siletz Bay wildlife refuge offered

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will offer 12 guided canoe and kayak trips exploring Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a U.S. National Wildlife Refuge on Oregon's coast. It is one of six National Wildlife Refuges comprising the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex.  during June, July and August. On each outing, participants will spend about two hours paddling the bay as they learn about the natural history of some of the birds and wildlife that inhabit the estuary. Participants must provide their own canoe or kayak. Dates of the first four outings, all to begin between 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., are June 5, 7, 19 and 21. Mine owners plan gold mining event this weekend

, and dredging for gold will be demonstrated this weekend by members of the Bohemia Mine Owners Association. The educational event will be held on one of the association's claims about three miles up Sharps Creek, off Row River Road east of Cottage Grove. Directional signs will be posted. Visitors are welcome 8 a.m. to dark on Saturday and Sunday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday.

'Volunteer fair' to be held June 9 in Oakridge

The Oregon Rangers Association, a backcountry patrol group, will host a "volunteer fair" June 9 at Greenwater Park in Oakridge. The event is billed as an opportunity to learn about chances to become involved in various public agency and nonprofit service group efforts to keep streams, rivers, forests and wilderness trails clean and safe. State and federal agencies will be represented along with a multitude of private and non-profit groups as well as vendors. Prized North Pacific food and sport fish (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) of the salmon family. The average weight is about 22 lbs (10 kg), but individuals of 50–80 lbs (22–36 kg) are not unusual.
 should be heating up any day in the McKenzie and Middle Fork Willamette rivers. Counts at Willamette Falls through May 16 were: 12,226 salmon and 2,827 summer steelhead. The McKenzie between Blue River and the head of Leaburg Lake is to be stocked this week with 7,000 fin-clipped trout, including 2,250 of the "larger" variety. Salmon and Fall creeks will each be stocked with 2,000 trout, the Coast Fork Willamette at Cottage Grove with 1,000, and the Middle Fork above Hills Creek Lake with 1,350.

Either of two species of small, yellow-eyed diving ducks that produce a whistling sound with their rapidly beating wings. The common goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) breeds throughout the Northern Hemisphere; Barrow's goldeneye (B.
, Barrow's goldeneye, and hooded mergansers in the high lakes of the Cascades. A good opportunity with easy access is Lost Lake off Highway 20.

Ranger district plans hikes, 'heritage expedition'

The Sweet Home Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest The Willamette National Forest is a National Forest located in the central portion of the Cascade Range of Oregon, US.[1] It contains 1,675,407 acres (2,618 mi², 6,780 km²) making it one of the largest national forests.  is offering 11 one-day guided hikes at a five-day, four-night "Heritage Expedition" this summer. The multi-day event led by archaeologist Tony Farque visits some of Judge Waldo's favorite places in the Cascades. It will be held Aug. 12-16. Cost is $475, including lodging at Clear Lake Resort, meals, activities and event-related transportation.
