Annual McKenzie River clean-up scheduled

The McKenzie River Guides, McKenzie Flyfishers and the McKenzie Watershed Council will hold their annual clean-up of the McKenzie River and its banks on June 28. Volunteer work parties will stage from Hendrick's Bridge Park at 9 a.m. and return to the park in early afternoon for a barbecue lunch. Anyone who can donate time, the use of a drift boat, or food, beverages or barbecue supplies for the volunteers' lunch is asked to call the McKenzie Watershed Council (687-9076) by June 25.

Portions of the Deschutes National Forest's Trapper Creek Campground on Odell Lake will be closed June 23 through mid-July due to construction for a bull trout restoration project. Heavy equipment operations will close campsites one through four and campsite six, forest officials said. The restoration work includes narrowing channels, increasing the number of pools and adding spawning gravel on 1,275 feet of Trapper Creek.

WILDLIFE VIEWING

Best bets

For a wildlife viewing challenge, try looking for the black swifts at Salt Creek Falls on Highway 58, site of the only known black swifts colony in Oregon. See them in early morning when they leave to forage for food or at dusk when they return. The swifts are believed to nest behind the falls.

Cascade Family Flyfishers: Guide Gary Lewis of Roseburg will present a slide-illustrated program on fly fishing the Umpqua River for shad shad, fish, Alosa sapidissima, of the family Clupeidae (herring family), found along the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to Florida and successfully introduced on the Pacific coast.
