International law includes rules on the treatment of prisoners of war but extends protection only to combatants. .

In truth, the video taken by his Miami relatives of the 6-year-old pointing his finger at the camera and saying in Spanish that he wanted to stay in America and not go home to Cuba was just plain creepy.

The situation has passed from human drama to human tragedy.

What's next? Elian signing book deals? Elian on the talk-show circuit? Elian hiring a manager to handle endorsement contracts for toys and fast food?

, everyone is victimizing an innocent little boy who has already lost his mother and nearly lost his life.

And the fanatics on both sides could care less.

Sadly, the world's most powerful nation seems powerless to resolve this before any more harm is done to this innocent little boy.

While the days go by and Elian is being paraded around and manipulated by everyone, the attorney general of the United States Noun 1. The only voice of reason came from Castro's younger sister, Juanita, who lives in Miami and who said Friday: ``This has become too politicized, in both Cuba and Miami, and too many people are profiting from this tragedy. I think people have forgotten that this is a human issue.''

If Elian is living in freedom right now in Miami, it looks a lot like a prison to the rest of the world.

For Elian, freedom has become just another word for nothing left to lose.
