Many people believe that Peter F. Drucker has influenced the development of business in the 20th century more than any other figure. Now, he appears at the beginning of the new century with a vision of challenges and problems for the third millennium. In Management Challenges for the 21st Century (HarperBusiness), Drucker points out that the changes in the next era will be more radical than the Industrial Revolution and that neither governments nor free markets are ready to face these social, demographic and economic transformations. According to Drucker, the task of adapting to new realities lies in the hands of management.

That's what Ravi Batra, economics professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, says in his new book, The Crash of the Millennium (Harmony Books). Known for his much-ballyhooed predictions, Batra warns of an impending economic catastrophe caused by monopolistic tendencies, excessive government expenditures, a high consumer credit index and sluggish salaries. Moreover, hard times for the U.S. will follow the crises in Asia, Russia and Latin America. And while Batra has been off on some of his forecasts, others have come true, including the end of Communism and the stock market's drop in September 1998.
