OTEP'S WISH COMES TRUE A TATTOOED DOROTHY TAKES THE ROAD TO OZZFEST.Byline: Jocelyn Cahir Staff Writer NOT ONLY IS OTEP OTEP Operational Test & Evaluation Plan OTEP On-Going Training and Evaluation Program surrounded by testosterone on a daily basis as the only female performer at Ozzfest, she also was overwhelmed to learn a young girl would look up to her. ``I just found out from the Make-a-Wish Foundation The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that grants wishes to children (2.5 years to 18 years old) with life-threatening medical conditions. that a girl wants to meet me,'' Otep said in a phone interview. ``It's just amazing. They don't cultivate girls to be a person like this. And for her to choose me, it's just overwhelming. There are no words big enough to describe this feeling.'' This black-lipped, abundantly tattooed poetry priestess, who is performing on Ozzfest's side stage Saturday at Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore, doesn't consider herself a role model. ``Role model? Hmmmm, not sure I am worthy of that designation,'' Otep said. ``Parents should be role models. I am simply a social observer, a commentator, a student of life, forever learning, forever receiving and forever seeking answers.'' For other social observers and commentators, there will be plenty to look at on Saturday. After the tour's delayed start, Ozzy missed a couple of dates to stay with his wife, but the family time quickly came to an end after the rocker nearly passed out during one of Sharon's chemotherapy treatments. ``She ordered me back on the road,'' Ozzy said. Similarly, while the tour was still in the works, record labels lined up to pay Ozzfest a reported $75,000 to have their acts booked on the second stage, where performers include Andrew W.K., the Apex Theory, Lost Prophets, Mushroomhead and the Los Angeles-based Otep. She had a vision of what her music should be, but needed to find the right elements to put it into motion. It wasn't until much later that things started to work out. Beginning with poetry ``Basically, I just went out and tried to do something sonic,'' Otep said. ``At first nothing seemed to work, so I showed our manager my book of poetry and illustrations and told him I wanted to take this and make this into music. After that, we set out again and found the right combination.'' That combination - Otep, Rob on guitar, Moke on drums and eViL j on bass - released its full-length Capitol Records Capitol Records is a major United States-based record label, owned by EMI, located in Hollywood, California. With so few women at the helm of rock bands and virtually none in aggressive rock bands, Otep considers her situation a gift, not a challenge. ``No, I don't think it is tough if you have what it takes to do it,'' Otep said. ``I don't mean that in an ego-type way, but your intentions have to be pure. Anything you do as a writer or artist, you have to be pure and vulnerable. ``I think women choose not to participate, because, No. 1, they don't think they can and, No. 2, they refuse to play,'' she adds. With a roar that's as big as her bite, Otep is not afraid to break the mold of today's female artists. ``We are socialized so·cial·ize v. so·cial·ized, so·cial·iz·ing, so·cial·iz·es v.tr. 1. So not Britney The pop-music industry is filled with pretty princesses, but Otep has no problems being where she is today and isn't afraid to poke a little fun. ``Really, Britney Spears? What is she doing? The industry is setting the standards,'' Otep said. ``(Fox TV's) 'American Idol' is absolutely absurd. When something pops it make a really loud noise, but as soon as the sound goes away, it's forgotten.'' With influences ranging from poets to writers and musicians, Otep's music may be considered performance art, with heavy guitar riffs and death metal mixed in. ``Our shows are brutal and savage,'' Otep said. ``At the same time, it's performance art, it's musical warfare.'' With this being her second Ozzfest, Otep has received nothing but admiration from other performers on the bill. ``I get a lot of respect from the bands on the tour,'' Otep said. ``They respect what I do. Zakk Wylde has been there watching, even Rob Zombie was listening to our CD on the road the other day. It's really something.'' Otep remembers another fan, the memory of whom remains a constant on the tour. ``I met Dave (Williams) last year,'' Otep said. ``I looked over during one of our performances, and he was watching us. He was an absolute fan of our band. He was an amazing guy. One thing that stood out about Dave was he was a gentleman, he treated me with nothing but respect. He was so funny and so friendly. In fact, he wore an Otep shirt on stage two days before he died. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave.'' OZZFEST What: All-day music festival featuring metal bands.
