OSTA Promotes Interoperability And System-Independence With Universal Disk Format; New Disk Format Enables the Development of Technology for Cross-Platform Data Interchange Via Optical Disks.

SANTA BARBARA Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 1995--The Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA (Optical Storage Technology Association, Cupertino, CA, www.osta.org) A membership organization composed of major optical drive manufacturers. Established in 1992, its purpose is to endorse standards and promote the use of optical media in computing. ) today announced the establishment of the Universal Disk Format (storage, standard) Universal Disk Format - (UDF) A CD-ROM file system standard that is required for DVD ROMs. UDF is the OSTA's replacement for the ISO 9660 file system used on CD-ROMs, but will be mostly used on DVD.  (UDF (1) (Universal Disk Format) A file system for optical media developed by the Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA), www.osta.org, based on the ECMA 167/ISO 13346 standard. ), a single file system interchange standard for computer-based applications.

UDF is an implementation of the International Standards Organization See ISO.  (ISO (1) See ISO speed.

) interchange standard for non-sequential recording of data (ISO 13346) and was developed by OSTA to make optical storage solutions independent of the data system.

UDF was developed by OSTA in response to an immediate need in the optical storage industry for a practical, fully compliant implementation subset of the ISO 13346 standard that would reduce the time required to develop compliant products, as well as promote reliable, economically competitive data storage and retrieval.

"UDF allows users to store files on optical media using one computer or operating system and then access the files using a different computer system," said Bill Kopatich, vice president of optical storage products for Verbatim, and chairman of the OSTA Board of Directors. "OSTA was determined to provide a format solution that addressed the immediate needs of today's rewritable optical storage providers and their customers. Based on the positive reception from vendors thus far, OSTA appears to have accomplished this goal."

"The goal of UDF is to facilitate data interchange independent of hardware, software and operating system," said Isaac van Kempen, senior product line manager at Fujitsu and chairman of the OSTA Technical Committee.

The Optical Storage Technology Association (OSTA) was incorporated as an international trade association in 1992 to promote the use of writable optical technologies and products for storage of computer data.

The organization's membership, comprising optical product manufacturers from three continents and representing more than seventy percent of worldwide writable optical product shipments, works to shape the future of the industry through regular meetings of CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. , market development, planning and technical committees. Interested companies worldwide are invited to join the organization and participate in its programs by contacting an OSTA representative at 805/963-3853.
