OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Announces New Golden DRAGON LED; Ideal for Automotive Daytime Running Light Applications; Advanced Technology Increases Brightness and Offers Improved Thermal Management.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif. -- OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. today announced the newest addition to its Golden DRAGON(TM) family of high-performance, light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The new Golden DRAGON leverages OSRAM's proprietary thin-film technology to offer exceedingly bright output and very low energy consumption. These features are ideal for automotive daytime running lights and other applications requiring high brightness levels, compact design and reduced lighting The reduction in brightness of ground vehicle lights by either reducing power or by screening in such a way that any visible light is limited in output. See also normal lighting.  system energy and cost. This announcement follows last week's public release of OSRAM's optimized thin-film Power TOPLED(R) LED portfolio, and the company will continue to roll out a comprehensive line of thin-film solutions across its LED product families.

Thin-film chip technology is an "industry first," providing increased optical output, better optical coupling, lower forward voltages and improved thermal performance compared with previous chip construction. Conventional LED chip technologies utilize creative structures with the drawback of side emission losses that can reduce the light output and reduce thermal performance. Thin-film technology emits light at the surface of the chip with a built-in reflector reflector: see telescope. , thereby increasing the usable light emitted from the chip. Thin-film architecture is "scaleable," enabling chip size to be increased without compromising efficacy as with conventional chip design.

"We are excited to push the limits of our thin-film capabilities by offering this technology differentiator across our complete LED portfolio," said Ellen Sizemore, director, LED Products Group, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. "Our technology achievements are an inherent OSRAM strength and ensure all our LED products offer the highest luminous efficacy Luminous efficacy

through the top of the chip, produces 64 lumens (lm) from an operating current of 500 milliamps (mA), a significant improvement over previous solutions. OSRAM developers additionally succeeded in reducing the forward voltage from 3.8 volts (V) to 3.2V, reducing power required and creating an ideal solution for specific exterior automotive applications. The new thin-film Golden DRAGON was designed with daytime running lights in mind. The proprietary color-grouping scheme ensures uniform light in one white group without discernable differences in color. The color location falls within the permissible Society of Automotive Engineers SAE International (SAE) is a professional organization for mobility engineering professionals in aerospace, automotive and the commercial vehicle industries.

in brightness. The small and robust design requires little headlight space and can withstand jolts and vibrations.

OSRAM continues to leverage its improved, innovative thin-film technology in its other LED product families, including the company's Advanced Power TOPLED(R), SIDELED(R) and miniaturized PointLED(R). Enhanced versions of these products will be available in the next calendar year.
