also homered in the sixth inning Wednesday night as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Angels 4-2 at Anaheim Stadium.

The Orioles hit nine home runs in the three-game series at Anaheim Stadium, giving them a major-league-leading 225. But Eddie Murray failed to connect, leaving him stuck at 499 for his career.

The 40-year-old switch-hitter had one hit in four at-bats - a double in the fifth. He remains on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. When he reaches that plateau, which could be during the Orioles' seven-game homestand that opens Friday night, he will join Hank Aaron and Willie Mays as the only players to hit 500 homers with 3,000 career hits.

Scott Erickson (10-11) allowed two runs on five hits in 7-1/3 innings.

Down 4-1 in the eighth, the Angels tried to rally. Erickson left with a runner on third and one out and reliever Jesse Orosco walked pinch-hitter Randy Velarde. Terry Mathews then gave up an RBI RBI

With two outs and runners on first and third, Mathews walked Tim Salmon, with ball four trickling behind catcher Mark Parent. Velarde started to break for the plate but stopped, and Parent's throw trapped him in a rundown for the last out. Had Velarde stayed put, Chili Davis would have batted with the bases loaded.

Randy Myers struck out the side in the ninth for his 27th save.

Anderson hit his 44th homer with one out in the sixth and Zeile followed with his third since being acquired by the Orioles from the Philadelphia last Thursday, for a 2-1 lead.

Dennis Springer (4-4) had blanked the Orioles on three hits before Anderson and Zeile hit consecutive homers for the second time in three days against the Angels.

Roberto Alomar followed with a single that chased knock Springer, and Palmeiro greeted Mark Holzemer with his 32nd homer.

The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first. Jim Edmonds hit a one-out double, went to third on an error by left fielder B.J. Surhoff, and scored on Salmon's grounder.

Notes: The Orioles face Detroit this weekend at Camden Yards. The Tigers have the highest ERA in the big leagues and have allowed 36 of Murray's homers. . . . Springer shut the Orioles out 13-0 on Aug. 25 for the only complete game of his career, but he has given up 11 homers in his past five starts. . . . Orioles second baseman Alomar made a nifty play to retire Davis for the final out of the fourth. Alomar, a five-time Gold Glove winner, backhanded Davis' grounder up the middle and flipped the ball to shortstop Cal Ripken, who threw Davis out at first by a couple of steps.
