Real-Time Dynamic Traffic Management of the Nation's Highways

ORINCON Industries, Inc., a diversified information technology company, today announced the availability of its new Traffic Reporting And Control (TRAC) System.

TRAC provides government transportation authorities with continual real-time comprehensive data for accurate traffic planning and precise traffic management. TRAC is a cost-effective solution for dramatically increasing traffic flow and reducing congestion. ORINCON's TRAC System can be accessed through a traditional telephone network and instantly on the desktop via an Internet connection enabling officials access from any laptop or PC.

Both traffic planners and traffic managers can customize TRAC's comprehensive data set for use. Traffic planners can store TRAC data, put it on a Web site or download it as necessary, and as data builds into historic sets, they can analyze it for traffic patterns. Traffic managers can pull out the data for planning and then integrate the software algorithms into other existing traffic monitoring applications. TRAC seamlessly integrates with these existing applications (such as video imaging) and enables them to reach their full potential.

TRAC identifies and classifies vehicles in 23 categories, allowing for accurate planning and precise traffic management. The system also automatically determines vehicle speed, eliminating the more costly multi-sector approaches, and continually tracks vehicles, resulting in access to predicted total transit times. TRAC provides all data by upgrading technology currently installed in modern highways and streets, allowing states to benefit from already-invested assets.

There are a number of factors that cause traffic congestion, including people's driving habits, inability to build new roads in proportion to needs, population growth, the fact that even new highways are immediately filled to capacity and the long lasting impact of accidents.

Recent statistics on America's growing population, and the ever-escalating number of cars and trucks on the roads indicate that traffic problems will only worsen. Compounding the situation is the lack of new roads. While the population of the United States grew by more than 21 percent between 1978-98, total road and street mileage grew by less than one percent. In addition, the number of registered motor vehicles rose by more than 42 percent in those two decades.

Information retrieved and processed by TRAC can be used by officials to affect the operation of managed lanes, dynamic traffic lights and ramp meters, and alert travelers to potential problems on their routes, and suggest alternatives. The heart of ORINCON's TRAC System is the Traffic Reporter, an intelligent vehicle detector that works with inductive loops. This unit uses proprietary signaling and neural network technology to produce an accurate inductive "fingerprint." Traffic Reporter was developed in conjunction with Reno A&E, a leading developer and supplier of inductive loop detectors.

The TRAC System was developed with support from the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) District 11 and a beta version is currently deployed to assess traffic flow at the Otay Mesa border crossing between Mexico and the United States.
