OREGON STEEL MILLS INC. ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO ITS SALES AND MARKETING ORGANIZATION

PORTLAND, Ore., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Oregon Steel Mills Inc. (OSM) (NYSE: OS) announced today that it has reorganized its sales and marketing functions to support the continuing market expansion of its plate products.
Larry G. Vucovich has joined Oregon Steel as plate sales manager. Vucovich will be responsible for all plate sales activity, including both outside and inside sales. Vucovich brings to OSM an extensive background in steel products sales and management experience. This includes 14 years with United States Steel/USX Corp. where he held various sales assignments related to plate, flat rolled and long products. During the last five years, he directed all commercial activities at Welded Tube Co. of America, a $90 million per year steel pipe and tubing producer, being named president in 1989.
 R. Kent Thies has been appointed plate product manager. Thies will assume all product management responsibilities for OSM Plate Products, to include pricing and profitability, product definition, new product and market development, and new facility requirements. Thies has been with Oregon Steel since 1974 and he most recently served as customer service manager.
Vucovich and Thies will report to Edward J. Hepp Jr., vice president-Marketing. Hepp said, "These newly created positions are a continuation of the successful process we began two years ago to increase our market penetration for plate products and to expand the range of products we offer. Our plate sales have grown steadily over this period, attaining record levels in both 1991 and 1992. With the installation of our vacuum degasser and the completion of our heat treating facility expansion in 1993, we expect to add additional products and markets. The restructuring of our sales and marketing functions is a necessary component of this growth."
Oregon Steel Mills produces steel plate and pipe from plants located in Portland; Fontana and Napa, Calif.; and Camrose, Alberta. Its Pueblo, Colo., plant, CF&I, produces steel rail, rod, bar and tubular products.
