ORCAD ANNOUNCES TOTALLY NEW PCB LAYOUT TOOLS; ORCAD'S FOUNDER LEADS NEW PRODUCT'S DESIGN TEAM

BURLINGAME, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- OrCAD today announced Printed Circuit Board Layout Tools 386+, a totally new, 32-bit set of layout tools that will enable the board designer to shorten the design cycle and the time to market for board products. The tools enable more control of the design process and the electrical environment of the design; easier creation and reuse of complex component shapes needed for high-speed, high-density designs; rapid connection of the dense, multichip modules needed to package the functionality; and faster completion of the design, its verification and release to manufacturing.
As a key part of OrCAD's strategy of providing total quality solutions, the new layout tools were developed by a design team led by John Durbetaki. He founded OrCAD and is the architect and developer of OrCAD's Schematic Design Tools, which rapidly became an industry standard after its introduction in 1986. "I threw out all the notions that were in our original PCB layout product and started from scratch," stated Durbetaki. "I adopted a typical designer's perspective, and took into account how a designer would look at designing things on a board. This approach has enabled us to produce a layout product that more than meets a designer's expectations."
Today's board designs require more involvement by the designer in the total layout and release process. The trend for the designer to control not only the circuit design but the packaging and electrical environment of the design as well is driven by time-to-market requirements, product- and development-cost targets, high-frequency signals, high-density packaging and the rapid changes of technology. "We designed Printed Circuit Board Layout Tools 386+ for today's design environment to give a design team control of the total product cycle," emphasized Dick Gomez, product marketing manager at OrCAD. "Printed Circuit Board Layout Tools 386+ allows the designer to use the latest packaging and interconnect technology and also facilitates the parallel implementation of design and layout."
Frank Costa, OrCAD's new vice president of marketing, said, "Traditionally, OrCAD users have moved to other more expensive tools when they found they needed more capacity and performance for more complex designs such as FPGAs and complex PLDs packaged in surface mount carriers. Our new 32-bit strategy is designed to chalow the designer to make the transition to new technologies and at the same time maintain the traditional OrCAD ease of use and high value."
 Availability and Pricing
Printed Circuit Board Layout Tools 386+ will ship the second quarter in both the United States and Europe through OrCAD's network of resellers. This product is the first in a series of releases designed to provide new capabilities for designing, laying out, analyzing and releasing boards.
In the United States, the product will sell for $2,495. A free upgrade program is available to current OrCAD PCB II users. The new product includes a warranty period of free technical support and, for current users of PCB II, an additional period of support upon upgrade. The price also includes access to the OrCAD Bulletin Board System for one year after purchase. Product information can be obtained by contacting Dick Gomez, OrCAD, Hillboro, Ore., at 503-690-9881.
In Europe, pricing, product and distribution information can be obtained by contacting Michel Wendell at OrCAD's European headquarters in Paris at 33-1-45755000.
