ORBUS MOTORS POWER TDRS INTO SPACE

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Two ORBUS motors developed by United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) Chemical Systems Division (CSD) successfully powered NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) into space today, following a successful deployment from the Space Shuttle Endeavour on Wednesday.
TDRS-F is the fifth in the tracking and data relay satellite system. The payload was coupled to a Boeing Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) system, which included two CSD solid rocket motors (SRMs), the ORBUS 6 and ORBUS 21. TDRS was deployed from Endeavour's payload bay by the CSD manufactured aft frame tilt assembly at 3:12 p.m. EST.
At 3:30 p.m. EST yesterday, CSD's SRM-1 ignited to propel TDRS-F toward a geosynchronous orbit. At 9:30 p.m. EST, SRM-2 ignited to continue TDRS-F's journey to a stationary point, 22,400 miles above the earth.
"Today's successful deployment of the TDRS-F is a direct result of the outstanding teamwork of CSD's IUS team," said Doug North, CSD executive vice president and general manager. "This marks the fifth successful deployment of a TDRS using CSD's ORBUS 6 and ORBUS 21 space motors," he added.
Chemical Systems Division, headquartered in San Jose, Calif., is a unit of Pratt & Whitney's Government Engines & Space Propulsion (GESP). P&W is a unit of United Technologies Corporation, based in Hartford, Conn.
