The first flat panels appeared on laptop computers in the mid-1980s, and the LCD technology became the standard. Stand-alone LCD screens became available for desktop computers in the mid-1990s and exceeded sales of CRTs for the first time  ("LCD") production operation in Korea.

Commenting on the order, a senior company spokesman at LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd., said, "The TFT LCD monitor market is expected to grow with 35% average for the coming five years, and there is still a shortage of supply. Through this joint venture, we are positioning ourselves to be the leading supplier of the most innovative LCD monitors on the market."
