ORANGE COUNTY MAN WINS EXTRA $1 MILLION FROM AM/PM IN BUD BOWL V SWEEPSTAKES

LOS ANGELES, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- ARCO's am/pm mini markets will award an extra $1 million to the winner of the 1993 Bud Bowl sweepstakes, ARCO Products Co. announced today. Because his winning entry form came from an am/pm mini market, the grand prize winner of Anheuser-Busch's Bud Bowl V sweepstakes also will receive $50,000 annually from am/pm over the next 20 years -- in addition to the separate sweepstakes prize of $1 million from Anheuser-Busch.
ARCO Products Co. is the refining and marketing arm of ARCO.
Samuel ("Sam") Clemens, 53, picked up his winning entry form from the am/pm mini market at Trask Avenue and Brookhurst Street in Garden Grove, Calif. The resident of nearby Fountain Valley, Calif. said he planned initially to buy a new car and then "decide carefully what to do with the rest of the money." Expressing shock at being the one sweepstakes winner out of a pool of more than 2 million entrants, Clemens said he would continue working at his job as a salesman marketing inventory services for the National Idea Center in Washington, D.C.
During a ceremony this morning at the Garden Grove am/pm mini market, Roger A. Smith, manager of am/pm franchise sales, presented Clemens with the first installment check of am/pm prize money.
"To mark our third year of participating in Anheuser-Busch's Bud Bowl promotion, am/pm made a special offer to award an extra $1 million to the sweepstakes winner -- if the winning entry form came from one of our stores," said Smith. "Then along came Mr. Clemens, who picked up his lucky form at our am/pm in Garden Grove. It just goes to show that you really do get more' but spend less' at am/pm."
The Bud Bowl V Sweepstakes promotion ran nationwide at all locations where Budweiser products are sold. Although the grand prize winner of the $1 million from Anheuser-Busch could have come from any state, only those scorecards obtained from am/pm mini markets in California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona qualified a sweepstakes entrant for the additional $1 million award from am/pm.
