OPTELECOM, INC. AND HYDRALITE, INC. SIGN JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT TO PROVIDE FIBER OPTIC TRANSMISSION PRODUCTS FOR CABLE TELEVISION MARKET

GAITHERSBURG, Md., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- OPTELECOM, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPTC) announces that it has taken an equity position in HydraLite, Incorporated of Jamison, Pa., and will work jointly with HydraLite in the development, production and sale of fiber optic communication systems for the cable television market.
HydraLite is a start-up venture operating under license from Jerrold Communications, a division of General Instrument, Inc., to utilize fiber optic technology developed at Jerrold under the direction of Dr. David Huber, now HydraLite president. Jerrold retains the right to market HydraLite products produced under the license. General Instrument is the world's largest supplier of cable television equipment and a world leader in digital compression technology for digital television systems.
OPTELECOM will provide management assistance and production facilities for HydraLite. HydraLite will manufacture fiber optic equipment that utilizes the large communication bandwidth capacity of optical fibers to provide video-on-demand and multimedia systems for cable television. The HydraLite licensed technology combined with General Instrument data compression technology has the capability of expanding the current 500 channel cable television capacity to more than 50,000 channels. Combined with large on-line video libraries, this will allow the consumer access to almost any movie on demand. It is anticipated that products using this technology will be introduced in late 1994.
