OPINION.Byline: The Register-Guard Be safe and courteous in forest The pigs who were camped near the big tree down U.S. Forest Service Road No. 1964 near Elk Creek Elk Creek may refer to the following: California:
At the campsite we were shocked to find a campfire, unattended and out of the ring. Fires were not allowed outside of designated campgrounds last weekend, yet they had one anyway. Not only did they have a fire, but they left the forest without extinguishing it. My husband ran back to the truck to retrieve a five-gallon water jug. He made repeated trips to the river to refill the jug in an attempt to put out the fire. After pouring 20 gallons of water on the fire, we left the area in search of a forest ranger forest ranger n. Having averted a forest fire, we took our grandson down to the river for some lunch. If you go out into the woods again, please don't litter, and follow fire safety guidelines. LORI ELAM Eugene Iraq war Iraq War: see under Persian Gulf Wars. Iraq War or Second Persian Gulf War Brief conflict in 2003 between Iraq and a combined force of troops largely from the U.S. and Great Britain; and a subsequent U.S. costs are staggering The war in Iraq rages on. As of Aug. 29, there were 2,626 U.S. soldiers dead and more than 19,500 injured. The total number of Iraqis dead is calculated as at least 64,000. These numbers represent an excessive and horrendous human cost, as well as a cost based on twin deceptions that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction Weapons that are capable of a high order of destruction and/or of being used in such a manner as to destroy large numbers of people. Weapons of mass destruction can be high explosives or nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological weapons, but exclude the means of transporting or and that Saddam Hussein Saddam Hussein (born April 28, 1937, Tikrit, Iraq—died Dec. 30, 2006, Baghdad) President of Iraq (1979–2003). He joined the Ba'th Party in 1957. Following participation in a failed attempt to assassinate Iraqi Pres. was responsible for the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001. These costs and lies alone ought to be enough to outrage us all to the point that we demand an end to this war. However, most of us are not aware of the financial costs of continuing this travesty. The National Priorities Project (www.nationalpriorities.org) reports that the U.S. cost of war as of Aug. 29 was $310,647,458,283. I have trouble even reading that number. That amount, for example, could have funded either 41,145,427 children for a year of Head Start, insurance for 186,016,779 children for one year, 2,797,094 additional housing units, or 15,059,538 four-year public university scholarships. The amount spent on the Iraq war by Lane County alone is $225,700,000! We are destroying not only Iraq with falsely waged war, but also ourselves - and our government is not allowing us to see the costs of war. Patriotism demands that we end our self-destruction and end this insane and costly war. On Sept. 1, parents across Chile's 13 states implored their government leaders to face the existence of an "invisible disability An invisible disability is a disability that is not (always) immediately apparent to casual observers; that is, it is not visible to the naked eye. Examples "The term [1]Invisible Disabilities refers a person's symptoms such as extreme fatigue, dizziness, pain, " that inhibits personal expression. Currently, the Ministries of Education and their same-party lawmakers believe speech-language disorders do not constitute a disability. This is preposterous! APANTeL hopes to persuade lawmakers to continue the 15 years of funding to the 659 special public language schools that serve more than 70,000 children for language disorders. The termination of funds appears to violate the UNICEF UNICEF (y `nĭsĕf'), the United Nations Children's Fund, an affiliated agency of the United Nations. Convention on human rights for children. These
include the right "to participate fully in family, cultural and
social life," and to "an education (that develops) the
child's mental and physical abilities."
To a child with a language disorder, this is very difficult, if not impossible, without proper instruction. If Chilean lawmakers terminate government funding, students will miss out on invaluable instruction, and all instructors, secretarial staff and speech-language pathologists, some 6,800 in total, would be without work. From afar it seems like an impossible battle, but it takes just one drop of water to break the surface tension. Please do whatever you can! The children cannot wait while lawmakers debate whether a language disorder is a true disability. EMILY MOSQUEDA Eugene County's ads a waste of money Am I the only one upset with our county government for its foolish and wasteful expenditures on broadcast advertising touting county employees? For the past several weeks, anyone who watches television or listens to radio has heard and seen these examples of public money being foolishly wasted. It bothers me to the point where I find it necessary to change stations when they come on. I am pondering sending the commissioners a bill for my share of this advertising budget - I want my money back. My assessment is that anytime government finds money to spend patting itself on the back, it is at least partially because it is overfunded. I have no doubt whatsoever that that there are many underfunded un·der·fund tr.v. un·der·fund·ed, un·der·fund·ing, un·der·funds To provide insufficient funding for. underfunded adj → infradotado (económicamente) programs that are of much greater importance. Some Americans truly can't wait for an election for a change in the ways that our needs are met by a fumbling government that absolves itself of responsibility by lying and rewriting facts. We must demand accountability and change. Our news media and representatives must focus on these issues with accurate reporting, highlighting successes, so that we can build on their effectiveness, and failures, so that we can assure that they will not happen a second time. The Register-Guard printed lies that will always be truth in the minds of people. The newspaper probably wouldn't have done this - or would have certainly downplayed it - had it involved a Democrat in any capacity, especially during the administration of Bill Clinton and company. Do the editors feel any embarrassment or humility at all? Of course, they won't be wasting much space on this news story. It goes against their mind-set - lock-step media thinking that to destroy a Republican is good for the country, even if we aren't sure of our facts. The difference now is that millions of us know-nothings outside the Beltway (from which The Register-Guard seems to get its news, along with whatever The New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It chose a city that was shunned by the rest of the high tech industry. It withstood criticisms, public outcries and many lawsuits. It had to endure media and public scrutiny that often was unfair and biased, and it somehow survived the Asian financial crisis of 1997, which wrecked many Asian economies and companies. The five years I spent in Eugene were the most difficult and challenging years of my life. Even a multi-billion-dollar company feels that pain when it's unfairly criticized, called undeserving names and bullied around for political purposes. My colleagues and their families felt and had to endure each and every one of those criticisms and name- callings. I no longer live in Eugene, but I am the biggest fan of Eugene. There are too many wonderful things to mention about Eugene. This is the very reason I write this letter. Hynix has been faithful to Eugene and its people despite all the things that should have caused any company in its right mind to leave. It is about time Eugene calls and embraces Hynix for what it is: a model corporate citizen.
