OPERA STAR HAS GLOBAL VOICE.

Byline: Stacy Brown Daily News Staff Writer

Kimball Wheeler has played to sold-out crowds in many of the world's most famous concert halls.

However, the mezzo-soprano mezzo-soprano: see soprano. , who was featured soloist at Saturday night's Pasadena Symphony concert, said her toughest room remains California's big house - the maximum-security San Quentin San Quentin (săn kwĕn`tən), peninsula extending into San Francisco Bay, W Calif., N of San Francisco. The state prison there was begun in 1852. San Quentin is the western terminus of the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge.  Prison.

``The prison guards had us sign a release that in case of an inmate revolt, they would not negotiate our release,'' said Wheeler, who teaches at the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts

Once inside, Wheeler and accompanist Cliff Jackson dazzled the inmates with a selection of music from Latin and spiritual to Mozart.

``The reception was more gratifying grat·i·fy

Wheeler, who made her solo debut with the New York Philharmonic The New York Philharmonic is the oldest active symphony orchestra in the United States, organized during 1842. Based in New York City, the Philharmonic performs most of its concerts at Avery Fisher Hall and has long been considered one of the best orchestras in the world.  in 1982 under the direction of Zubin Mehta, has seen her career zoom into orbit as she has performed world premieres at the Rome Opera, New York's Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Washington's John F. As a young girl growing up in Pacific Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). , Wheeler developed a talent for traveling. Her stepfather, Lyle Reynolds Wheeler, whose art direction on the classic film ``Gone With the Wind'' won him an Academy Award, often traveled the world with the youngster and the rest of the family in tow.

``There wasn't much music in my life as a child, the only music I was exposed to was Joan Baez and some stupid-looking woman with horns on her head and breastplates,'' Wheeler said.

While attending college in Vermont, Wheeler performed a solo with the school choir and earned rave reviews from The New York New York, state, United States

``I spent a few sleepless nights and then changed my major from literature to voice,'' said Wheeler, who earned bachelor's and master's degrees from CalArts.

Wheeler's own 10-year-old daughter, Amanda Gayle, is a frequent guest at her mom's performances (``often against her will'') and also sings in a school choir.

Wheeler said she was eagerly looking forward to Saturday's concert because of the conductor, Jorge Mester, her husband.

``It has been my honor to collaborate with many of the world's greatest conductors. But there is something magical about collaborating with Jorge,'' Wheeler said. ``I am sure I do my best work with him. It's a magical collaboration and no matter what happens in my career or who I work with, to come back and work with Jorge is the greatest.''

The recipient of the prestigious Pro Musicis Award and the Liederkranz Award for Wagnerian singers, Wheeler recently made her film debut in Andreas Frezza's ``L'Ultimo Bersaglio'' and she recently recorded the CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

Wheeler said she is most comfortable when teaching and on the stage. ``Everything that is required to get to that stage is what drives me crazy,'' Wheeler said. ``The packing, the traveling, feeding the cat and of course making sure Amanda is at the top of my list is so important.''
