OPENING SOON PAIR OF WAL-MARTS BACK ON TRACK IN ANTELOPE VALLEY.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

PALMDALE - After overcoming a lawsuit lawsuit: see procedure; tort.  and a referendum referendum, referral of proposed laws or constitutional amendments to the electorate for final approval. This direct form of legislation, along with the initiative, was known in Greece and other early democracies. , Wal-Mart is set on Jan. 23 to open its new east Lancaster and east Palmdale stores.

While critics feared that the stores would be competitor-gobbling ``supercenters'' - containing complete grocery stores - both will open as conventional discount stores, though slightly larger than the west-side Lancaster and Palmdale stores and with room to expand, company officials said.

``It is a good size,'' Wal-Mart spokeswoman Susanne Decker said.

The Lancaster and Palmdale stores are among 18 the $191 billion retailer is scheduled to open Jan. 23, from Rhode Island Rhode Island, island, United States

Officials are still organizing the grand opening ceremonies, but officials said they usually include dignitaries and activities, coupled with donations to local charities.

``It'll be fun day,'' Decker said.

For example, the Jan. 9 opening of a new-style Wal-Mart grocery store in Wal-Mart home state of Arkansas will be attended by the local congressman, a Dallas Cowboys

Both the Lancaster and Palmdale east-side stores cover nearly 150,000 square feet, compared with about 145,000 square feet for Wal-Mart's 10-year-old west Palmdale store.

Employees were busy this week stocking the new stores, and some internal construction like assembling shelves and cabinets was going on.

The east Palmdale Wal-Mart, at 47th Street East and Avenue S, had to overcome a November 2000 referendum backed by a supermarket clerks union. Construction started after Palmdale residents voted 65 percent to 35 percent to confirm a City Council land-designation change.

The east Lancaster Wal-Mart started construction on Avenue J at 20th Street East after opponents dropped a lawsuit in exchange for the city's agreement to prepare a full environmental impact report.

The report said shoppers' vehicles would pollute pol·lute
