OPENING HOMES, HEARTS : 4 AREA FAMILIES PUT HOUSES ON DISPLAY FOR SEASONAL FUND-RAISER.

Byline: Mary Schubert Daily News Staff Writer

A weekend fund-raiser gives added meaning to the phrase ``home for the holidays'' as four decorated houses will be on public display Saturday to benefit programs at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

The 16th annual Holiday Home Tour will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost $12.50 in advance and $15 Saturday.

Diana Vose, executive director of fund development for the hospital foundation, said only on rare occasions has the same house been on the tour twice. ``This community certainly is abundant with beautiful homes,'' she said.

Homeowners often volunteer to donate the use of their house for the charitable cause, but organizers sometimes stumble across an exceptional candidate - and then convince the owner to take part. ``Sometimes, we'll just notice a beautiful home, not know who lives there, and just knock on Noun 1. knock on - (rugby) knocking the ball forward while trying to catch it (a foul)

The black-and-white decor of the Thomas home lends itself to the ``crystal and ice'' theme chosen by the Holiday Home Tour interior decorators.

``The two homes at the top of the hill have the most commanding views of the valley,'' she said.

The guests are asked to slip surgical booties over their shoes so as not to soil the homeowners' carpets or scuff their floors, Vose noted. Sometimes organizers place plastic runners on the floors on which guests can walk.

Hospital foundation volunteers will act as docents, providing visitors with information about the homes, along with watching over each house and its contents. ``They'll make sure that guests aren't going where they're not supposed to go,'' Vose said.

A side attraction to the home tour is an arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. Each year, the foundation earns $25,000 to $30,000 in profits from the Holiday Home Tour and averages about 1,100 tickets sold, Vose said.

The proceeds are used to fund the hospital's birthing services, such as buying neonatal equipment and offering prenatal and childbirth classes, Vose said.

``We're close to a sellout this year. We only printed 2,000 tickets, and I don't think we have 100 (tickets) left. We'll print more - there's no limit, because people come and go all day.''
