OPEN ENVIRONMENT CORP. ENHANCES THREE-TIERED TOOLKITS

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Open Environment Corporation (OEC) announced the Oct. 25 release of its OEC Toolkit Version 1.1 a set of software tools designed to enable developers to rapidly build and deploy distributed three-tiered client/server applications in enterprise-wide environments. Key features of the toolkit include security management tools to monitor authorized users for access to protected data, and an application management utility which improves system responsiveness by distributing system processing based on available resources.
"The principal benefit of the OEC Toolkit is that it allows businesses to build new classes of client/server applications today, which will lead them into the incorporation of open distributed computing standards such as DCE and CORBA for tomorrow." said Sundar Subramaniam, CEO of OEC. "Using the tools, OEC customers can leverage their existing data, hardware and software investments to create new services that will give them a competitive advantage, within a timeframe measured in weeks, rather than months or years."
OEC Toolkits, presently in use by such companies as Alcoa, United Behavioral Systems, Dow-UT and Mobil Oil, now offer robustness and improved functionality which are the result of stringent quality and testing efforts undertaken by OEC and its customers. The toolkits serve to speed up and facilitate the development of distributed client/server software applications by automating many of the repetitious steps involved in code generation and debugging.
The OEC toolkit enables integration of many popular graphical user interfaces such as PowerBuilder(TM), VisualBasic(TM) and Enfin(TM) with a number of relational databases such as Oracle(TM), Informix(TM), Sybase(TM) and DataBase 2(TM).
The toolkit is sold as a development package, by server platform, and is equipped with all components necessary for the development, testing and production of distributed client/server applications. It will initially be available for IBM, AIX, and HP-UX server platforms and OS/2 and MS Windows client platforms. Support for OS/2, OSF/1, SunOS and UNIX System V is scheduled for late 1993.
Based in Cambridge, Mass., OEC provides educational courses and client/server development software, based on a three-tiered architecture which separates applications into graphical user-interface, functionality and data
access layers. The three-tiered approach facilitates rapid application development and systems integration across heterogeneous platforms. OEC is a member of the Open Software Foundation and currently has over 100 installed sites.
