Share of time spent online on Content grew 1.1%, from 37.0% in February 2005 to 37.4% in March 2005, likely driven by a roster of high-profile news and sports events, including the Terri Schiavo Theresa Marie "Terri" Schiavo (December 3, 1963 – March 31, 2005), from St. Petersburg, Florida, United States was a woman who suffered brain damage and became dependent on a feeding tube.  case, the Michael Jackson Noun 1. . Communications saw similar gains, growing 1.0% from 39.9% in February 2005 to 40.3% in March 2005. The increase in Communications was primarily driven by an increase in IM activity, which could be attributable, in part, to students' spring break vacations.

Commerce registered the greatest month-over-month decline on a percentage basis (-3.8%), reversing the seasonal gains it experienced as a result of the holiday shopping season that began in November and extended through Valentine's Day Valentine's Day: see Saint Valentine's Day.

An analysis of year-over-year data shows that Content experienced the largest gains in share of time spent online on a percentage point basis, up .6 percentage points from 35.0% in March 2004 to 35.6% in March 2005. Conversely, Search dropped .4 percentage points, from 3.9% in March 2004 to 3.5% in March 2005, while Commerce and Communications remained flat over that same time period.

About the Internet Activity Index

The Internet Activity Index divides and tracks Internet usage among four distinct activities - Content, Communications, Commerce and Search. The Index is based on the proprietary clickstream The trail of mouse clicks made by a user performing a particular operation on the computer. It often refers to linking from one page to another on the Web.  database that underlies Nielsen//NetRatings' NetView service. Popular online offerings were divided into Communications, Commerce, Content, and Search segments based on an objective approach developed by both the OPA and Nielsen//NetRatings. Nielsen//NetRatings calculates usage metrics for each segment using the same algorithms that are used for all NetView-based custom analytics offerings. The full results of the Internet Activity Index, along with historical data on a variety of metrics for each category, can be found at the Online Publishers Association Web site at www.online-publishers.org/iai.
