Entertainment Network will unveil today a service that will allow customers to watch movie trailers and then buy movie tickets either online or through its network of 350 kiosks in eight states. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , expects to be able to offer movie tickets for 27,000 of the nation's 34,000 movie screens. That's significantly more than any other online competitor now can. The service will also prevent the disappointment of showing up at a theater for a show that's already sold out and enable customers to avoid standing in line at box offices. It's unknown yet whether customers will have to pay a surcharge for the service and it's unclear how soon the service will start. Costa Mesa-based ETM is partnering with Icon Software, a leading provider of operations software for movie chains. Five-year-old ETM also will sell movie tickets through its Web site (www.etm.com), although after making the purchase, customers will still have to retrieve the tickets at an ETM kiosk. ETM operates ATM-style, ticket-selling kiosks at shopping centers and supermarkets in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. In the live-event industry, it is a small competitor to the dominant player, Los Angeles-based Ticketmaster. Last year, Ticketmaster sold 70 million tickets worth more than $2 billion to 150,000 events through 2,900 retail outlets and an extensive Internet operation. It currently doesn't sell movie tickets. New York-based MovieFone Inc. does sell advance tickets to movies over the telephone and through its Web site. The company, which sells tickets for 3,000 screens for a fee of $1 to $1.50, agreed last month to a $388 million buyout by America Online. Kevin Skislock, an entertainment industry consultant with Laguna Research Partners in Irvine, said ETM's deal makes sense as buying items over the Internet gains popularity. ``I think this is a very positive deal for ETM because they have to get a foothold on the Internet,'' he said. ``It's very key for them to get as close to their customers as possible. At some point, there's going to be hardware and software that can spit out a ticket on a home computer, so these companies have to be positioned to take advantage of that when it happens.'' |
